Q: Pregnancy And Birth Control...

Hi. I am 18 years old and I have been on the pill for a little under 2 years (i was put on it because my cycles were very irregular- only 2x a year). My boyfriend and I have been sexually active for about a year now and we've already had one pregnancy scare. Just this past month, I messed around with my pill so I could have my period later in the month. Basically, I stopped taking my pill for 1 week and then started where I left off. Exactly 1 week after I started taking my pill again, my boyfriend and I had sex. This morning, I woke up with nausea and a little bit of dizziness. I never get the flu (i haven't gotten if for the past 4/5 years) and i've always been very healthy. I'm not really worried about being pregnant because, if I am, then I am. I'm just wondering: how possible is it to get pregnant after messing with the pill like that? Also, how soon after conception can you have the symptoms of pregnancy (aka- morning sickness)? Thanks!

Ok first off if you want to get you period a week late dont ever ever go off your pill because you can get pg, if you want to not have your period the week its do then when you get to then inactive pills start a new pack. Did you use condoms when you had sex the week you were not on the pill, you should also use another back up method until you are on your pills again for another 2 weeks or so, and if you want to make sure that you dont get pg use condoms all the time then.

Just to add to what she said....If you go off your pills for a week and then start them back up again, its going to take some time for you to get back to a "therapeutic level"....Meaning you arent going to be protected the very minute you start taking them again! You need to be more careful! I hope everything works out for the best! We're here if you need to talk!

No, we didn't use a condom. Usually we do, but this time we didn't have one. Confused The thing is, the day we had sex was supposed to be during the time when a woman is most fertile, but since I messed with my pill, i'm not sure it was. Also, I know that the pill is 99% effective if used properly (taken at the same time everyday etc.)... And I know that I don't always take it at the same time everyday (which makes it about 92% effective). How possible is it for me to be pregnant?

If you are that worried about it then go to the dr and ask for a blood test, are you late if so how late are you. But any time you mess with your pills like that you can get pg. So maybe you can test soon. Does your boyfriend know you think you are pg. How old are you guys.

Thank you guys so much for the support and answers. Not exactly what I wanted to hear... But if i'm having sex, I have to deal with the consequences, right? Anyways, i'm 18 and my boyfriend is 17 (he'll be 18 in january). No, he doesn't know what I suspect because I don't want to get him involved just yet (we've already been through one scare). My period is supposed to come one week from today (next saturday) but because I screwed around with my pills... Yeah. If I don't get my period, then i'll take a test, but I don't want to spend the money on one until then. I'm wondering, how soon after conception do symptoms arise? I woke up this morning and something just didn't feel right within me (i know a few people who knew they were pregnant the day after conception). Maybe i'm being paranoid... Confused

Did you have unprotected sex while you were "missing" pills?
If you had been back on your pills for at least 7 days before having unprotected sex, then there is a good chance things will be ok.

As someone else said if you want to delay your period, just skip the inactive pills and go straight on to the next active pack straight away.

Most pills suppress ovulation and while skipping pills can lead to pregnancy (even one pill) as you have been on them for quite some time, even if you stopped taking them now to try and concieve it might take a while to get back to a normal cycle and ovulate.

So there is to ways of looking at your situation - because of the hormones in b/c pills suppressing ovulation - technically the body thinks it is pregnant, so a test may be inaccurate, I would suggest a blood test from your doctor instead.

I'd been back on the pill for 6 days when we had sex. And if I skip the inactive pills, it actually makes my period a week earlier rather than later... At least that's what it's always done for me.

Skipping the inactive pills should make it like this

days 1 - 21 normal pills (days 22-28 would be inactive - period days) but by skipping the inactive ones you are making it

days 1 - 42 "normal pills" then days 43- 49 would become the inactive or period days

If you skip your period by just starting a new pack when you hit your inactive pills that is fine, but you have to let yourself have a period every three months.
If you don't take your pills correctly you can be very fertile. People get pregnant on the pill everyday, yes, even people who take it 100% correctly. So, if you don't want babies, then take your pill correctly (don't mess around with it!) and use condoms.

I usually don't mess with my pills like this (i've only done it one or two other times when my period's landed during a very bad time). The pill is 92% effective since I don't use it 100% correctly, and since I skipped a week... How fertile does this really make me? Also, nobody's answered my question of how soon do symptoms of pregnancy arise (i've heard of cases where the girl knows the next day)?

I think that its quite likely to be pregnant from a birth control mess up...But then again some peolpe have to stop taking it completely for months to even get pregnant. I had signs between 3-4 weeks.

I wouldn't expect signs the next day Shocked it takes at least a few days for the sperm and egg to meet, travel to the uterus, and implant in the uterine wall.
Most women experience symptoms between 5-8 weeks. But some will "know" sooner.

I never meant having symptoms the next day! That'd be crazy! I was just wondering if people "know" the next day, and if they did, how?! *sigh* this whole process is sooooooo weird... Not really confusing, just weird! A part of me hopes I am pregant while another part of me is kinda scared! *crosses fingers*

Ok, so here's a weird one for you...
My boyfriend just imed me and we were talking and then, out of the blue, he asks me about the "chances of me being pregnant this time around." I haven't mentioned anything to him or anybody else, and I think it's seriously weird that we both started having a "feeling" as of late about the last time we had sex!
