Q: Oral Sex & Herpes Viruses

Hi everyone - just another little anxiety I have sometimes...

I was under the impression that performing oral sex on somebody is *very very bad* if you've got a mouth-ulcer/cold-sore, because it could give the person genital herpes.

I was once in a relationship with a virologist, and one night, he wanted me to... "perform" but I was recovering from a cold-sore. He took a look at it, and said that it would probably be okay. I know he wasn't exactly impartial to the situation... But still.

Anyway, I get cold-sores and mouth-uclers quite a lot, and take lots of vitamins to keep my immune system running better. I always check my mouth thouroughly before going down on my partner, but then, the next day, I might find a little sore patch in mouth, and it really scares me in case i've given him a horrible, incurable std! My boyfriend doesn't seem too worried - we've been together three years, and no nasty suprises so far.

On the one hand, i'm pretty sure oral herpes and genital herpes are two different but related viruses, and the risk is probably very low - but it's causing me a bit of worry. Does anybody know the facts on this?

Julia xx

Thanks for the reply.

I know I have oral herpes, but then, so does everybody I know! It's very common, so it's not something i'm at all concerned about. If I went to my gp, he'd laugh me out of his surgery, and tell me to get more sleep and take my vitamins.

I'm more concerned about its relation to genital herpes, which is less common, much more severe, etc., etc.

I think it probably is possible to pass it on, that is what I always heard...But have you tried zovirax yet? I only get cold sores about once every three years now, although it used to be much more often when I was younger. The last couple of times I felt that oh-no thing by a lip, I used it and it seems to keep them from happening.

Yes, You Can Spread It Through Oral Sex
I know of two indivuals that have contracted genital herpes through oral sex. In fact, I may ask them to post here. One of the individuals who passed it on has never had genital herpes, just cold sores. Now his girlfriend is suffering with genital herpes, and he lives in a world of major guilt.

The viruses are very very similair, and can easily be passed. Please do not take the chance, its not worth the agony caused to someone else.

yes, a woman with herpes can give birth to a child without infecting him/her. My mother has herpes and gave birth to three herpes-free children. As long as the ob/gyn is aware of the condition, they can opt for a c-section if the mother has an outbreak. The key is being aware and support the immune system during pregnancy to avoid it.

My mother never gave her herpes to my father, they were diligent about not fooling around when she had sores.

Take care.

Oral Sex & Herpes Viruses
First of all, I don't know why anyone would want to perform oral on anyone until they are both checked clinically. Whether you have sores in you mouth, or you think you don't, this is not a good approach to oral. If you have a tooth cavity, that could be an avenue for problems. Get medically check for transmittal diseases. Sad

I've heard that if u have a cold sore u can pass it through oral sex however it is more unlikely. But why chance it?

Yes when preg and having birth u can pass genital warts and herpes to the child. Usually only if ur having an outbreak at the time of birth. And the child won't always get it.

I am infected with gential herpes i'll give the whole story so that way maybe coming for someone with the deaise it will help you. I was just getting over being very sick and had a fever blister on my lip I went down on myboyfriend and then had sex with him. I ended up with genital herpes, however he has never had a single outbreak. And since he is the only person I have ever been with it had to of come from him. I had my daughter a year after being diagnosed. I never had an outbreak during my prgnancy. If you have a current outbreak when you go into labor they take the baby c-section because it cna pass to the baby but is much worse for the baby it causes blingness nervous system problems and many other problems often leading to death. I am now pregnant with my second child he is due in feb. I just had an outbreak and took the meds and was treated. Ihad my daughter c-section due to her size before her I only weighted 100 lbs i'm little she was almost 9 lbs and wouldnt' come out so I will have my son c-section too plus I have a severe back injury which makes it immpossible for me to pus a baby out. But if I wouldn't have limitations my kids would have been born naturally. Now when having a baby theres precautions to take to keep the baby from getting it. I wasn't so careful and my two year old might have gh from bathing with me. So no baths with the baby, we don't wash our clothes with hers or the babies. And now the babies won't be washed with hers. So lots of extra laundry but you can't ever be too causious kisses in our house are cheeks only for my daughter and will be for the baby. Hope I helped a little

Hopefully this will help clear up the confusion:
there are 2 types of the herpes simplex virus: type 1 and type 2
type one is usually associated with cold sores on the mouth, type 2 is genital herpes. However, you can get either type orally or on the genitals. It is very contagious. If someone has a cold sore on their mouth, it can cause genital herpes, and vice versa. It is easy to get blood tests for both types. However, if you test positive for one and not the other, you still won't know if you have genital or oral herpes. Men do not have breakouts as frequently as women on average. You can have herpes for years and never know it. You can also transmit the virus without knowing you have a breakout. Hope this helps somebody out there.
