I am a 55 y.o. male 6' 230 lbs with permanent injuries to my right shoulder. I caught a 60 pound kitchen cabinet that fell from a delivery truck in a twisting motion to the right while standing slightly to the left of the cabinet. Although I saved the cabinet I managed to tear up my shoulder. I have had three surgeries from two doctors and four different opinions but I may need a fourth surgery.
As a result of holding my shoulder and right arm tense to keep my shoulder in socket and guard from pain my middle and lower back pain has become a problem. My long tendon is severed, my bursa was removed and my acromiun bone was ground down, my tendon at the front of my shoulder where a pectoral transfer would be done was 50% torn and now is 100% severed according to an MRI, my rotator cuff was perforated stretched and repaired also has a small tear at the back above my shoulder blade but not repaired. Muscle group retraining therapy was recommended to avoid any more surgery but that is not going so well.
Since starting muscle group retraining physical therapy to strengthen all the muscles around my shoulder injuries my physical therapist discovered that my middle spine is jambed to the right causing my right rib cage to push up on my shoulder blade giving me pain in my middle back with muscle spasms in the area below my right shoulder blade. My pelvis is slightly twisted to the left and my right hip is slightly lower than my left. When my physical therapist works on the muscle groups around my lower spine and realigns my hips and sacrum I get chronic aching pain in my lower back above my buttocks and my right hip, my left front thigh gets a pins & needles and numbness feeling. When I get out of bed in the mornings my knees feel like they are going to buckle and my lower back just aches with pain.
This shoulder issue has been going on for 2 1/2 years and after one arthroscopic and two open surgeries I still have 4 to 6 pain at times when I try to lift my arm over my head or extending my arm out in front or reaching outward to the side or behind me. I cannot lift my arm any higher than my shoulder. When my physical therapist extends my arm over my head I get pins & needles and numbness in my middle & ring fingers. My questions are; is my shoulder injuries responsible for my back problems or perhaps catching the cabinet in the manner as described above could have damaged my back? My workman's comp doctor has released me to return to work with a 5-10 lb push pull lift restriction on my right dominant arm and says the back issues are not related. Since my workman's comp analyst has halted my physical therapy and is disputing my back issues should I go forward with a fourth arthroscopic surgery to repair the rear R.C. tear, clean up tissue and relieve any impingements in hopes of reducing the pain in my arm? Is it time to throw in the towel?
