Hi all, I am new to these boards and don't know where to turn. My story is....My father was a roofer and fell off a roof about 35 years ago and broke his back. He has had 4 surgeries, mri's, etc. He is currently on ms contin, duragesic pain patches, and zoloft for depression. Is a pain management doctor who he should be seeing or should he go to a neurologist? He is very difficult to deal with and I try to be patient with him because I know he is in pain. He also has some mental issues. I get so frustrated with him because I don't know what to do for him. I am the one he takes it out on when his pain gets bad. Right now i'm the bad daughter. I take care of his bills, do his laundry, make his doctors appts., clean his apartment, buy his groceries, and so on. He won't even try to do anything for himself. Until april he was living in an assisted living facility but got kicked out for smoking in his room. I got him an apartment about 6 miles from me and now I have no life. I refused to take him to the hospital earlier and now he says i've stolen from him, my mother turned me against him (he has no qualms about borrowing money from her though), and he needs for me to stay away from him. I can't keep doing this. My doctor has put me on lexapro for anxiety and depression. He is driving me crazy. Also, what are the odds he is addicted to the ms contin since he has been taking it for 5 years? I am his only child. Help!!!!! Barbara

Wow,you certainly have your hands full.It is very sad when someone needs help and will not get it.Your dad should have a complete physical and psychiatric exam.Chronic pain can cause mental health issues and you are right to be concerned about a drug dependency problem.A neurologist and a pain management specialist should work together to try to help him.Best of luck to you!!Patty

Hi there! As a caregiver and a social worker I totally understand where you are coming from! Try to hire a caregiver, sometimes the state will help you out with this, you need a break! It is tooo difficult for family to take care of family members under these types of situations(just my opinion)!
As a caregiver I have learned when to walk away, as I get frustrated too,
especially when they are not motivated, my saying is that "you can lead a horse to water, but you can not make them drink".
You might want to think about hiring an experienced caregiver even if it is just a couple of days a week, just so you can have a break! I wish you were here so I could help you out!
I do understand pain, I live in pain all the time, but there are tooo many people out there that take it out on the wrong people!
I agree with pattyv, he does need both a neuro and a pain management Dr., and possibly a psych eval., but most men are in denial about this(the psych) you might want to talk with his Dr. And let him/her know what is going on.
Sincerely,
sandy

Hi, thanks for the replies. I'm going to find a local neurologist that can work with his pm doctor. It is hard being the only person he will let do anything for him. Reading the posts here are also very insightful. Thanks! Barbara
