Tms is transcranial magnetic stimulation and is a relatively new and safe way to treat depression. The idea is to send a magnetic charge to the left prefrontal cortex in hopes to reestablish activity in that region. Most people with depression have an abnormality in the activity of their left prefrontal cortex and that includes slower brainwaves and decreased blood flow. The left pfc controls the amygdala, which is the almond shaped area in the brain that is responsible for our fight or flight system. The left pfc is also linked with having positive thoughts, while an overactive right pfc will produce negative thoughts (and when the left pfc is underaroused the right is usually overaroused). Anyway, I was wondering if anyone knows of someone who has had tms treatments? It sounds very promising to me.
