I'm a firefighter, and I went to a first aid call yesterday of a 4-week old baby girl choking. So, I get there, and the poor thing is gray in color, and the tiniest thing I have ever seen! She was like death gray. After a baby stops breathing, they turn blue, and then from blue to gray. She was born on august 22nd, which was 5 weeks early then her due date. She currently weighed 4 lbs 4oz, only 3 lbs 15oz at birth. Her head was no bigger than a baseball, no joke.
Anyway, so I check to see if shes breathing, and she is, but barely at all. Her heatbeat is so faint, I can barely hear it. Shes struggling to cough, but cant because she's too weak and exhausted. So I roll her onto her tummy, (shes in my arms) and i'm rubbing her back trying to help her puke, or spit up what she was choking on, and what do ya know- she did!!! A whole lot of yellow-ish formula comes up! I was so relieved, but she still could barely breath.
I started giving her some oxygen, and within 5 minutes she started crying (which was soooo good) and her color changed from dark gray to baby pink immediately. Her little belly started going up and down again with the big breaths she took, it was just amazing!! So then I gave her back to gramma (mom-17- had left like 15 minutes before this whole thing started to get her baby girl a new formula). We (the paramedics) still took baby to the hospital, just to check her out, even tho she was breathing and crying beautifully.
I just thought i'd share. The baby was sooo limp and like dead when I got there, and so full of life when we took her to the hospital. I was just amazing.
