I Need Math Help Too!
Posted: 09-14-04 13:07pm

I need help with word problems. I could do the math but I don't know how to put it into an equation.

1. A rectangle is twice as long as it is wide. The perimeter is 6 feet. Find the dimensions.

3. A square has a perimeter os 28 feet. Findthe length of each side.

5. A triangle has a perimeter of 23 inches. The medium side is 3 inches more than the shortest side, and the longest side is twice the shortest side. Find the shortest side.

7. The length of a triangle is 3 meters less than twice the width. The peremeter is 20 feet. Find the dimensions.

9. A livestock pen is built in the shape of a rectangle that is twice as long as it is wide. The perimeter is 48 feet. If the material used to build the pen is $1.75 per foot for the longer sides and $2.25 per foot for the shorter sides (the shorter sides have gates, which increase the cost per foo 0, find the cost to build the pen.

All I need to know is how you write them as equations.

Please help, it's for this afternoon.

Shute I had really high marks in math, but when it came to word problems or design/3d, I always screw up... What about sparknotes or some university site?? My dads a math teacher for highschool (grades 9-12), and took 4 years of math at university.. So mybe when I go to my parents later I could show him the problems and see what he can do.

1. 2x+x=6 (not sure though)

3.28/4 = x

4x=28 (thanks lauren Wink )

5. 2x+x+3+x=23
4x+3=23
4x=20
x=5

then the medium side is 8 and the long side is 10

7.
2x-3+2x-3+x=20
5x-6=20
x=5.2

which means the long sides = 7.4

7.4+7.4+5.2=20

9. (props go to lauren for this one)
2x+2x+x+x=48
6x=48
x=8
1.75(32)+2.25(16)

What? If you are talking about my answer.

Here is the problem ....

A triangle has a perimeter of 23 inches. The medium side is 3 inches more than the shortest side, and the longest side is twice the shortest side. Find the shortest side.

3 + 4s = 23 is the obvious formula.

Solution.....

Perimeter = 23
medium side = m
shortest side = s
longest side = l

m = 3 + s
shortest side = s
longest side = 2s

3 + s + s + 2s + = 3 + 4s + 23

3 + 4s = 23
-3 -3

4s = 20
___ ___

4s 4s (which is the same as dividing 4s into 20)

s = 5.

Medium side = 8
shortest side = 5
longest side = 10

there u go hunnie..Simple math..Lol..

I want to thank you guys, I spoke to my teacher last night and gave me another chance to work on those problems, since I show the the other 50 problems and I did all of those. I really appreciate the help.
