Hello -- I don't know if this is the right area to post this, but I hope someone can give me some information. I am really tired of all this birth control business, and I am considering getting sterilised (having my tubes tied), but it is a but frighteneing, and I don't really know what to expect. I've just turned 39, and I know I don't want children. I've kept expecting that the urge would turn up, everyone said, it'll hit you when you're 30, or 35, and now they say wait until 40, but definitely nothing happening! All I can see is the amount of trouble and mess and expense of hacing children. So now that I am older I am going to have to come off the pill, i've been on it off and on for more than 20 years now (probably about 16 years altogether, that is something like 3,500 little pills). So I would like to find out if there is going to be any effect, for instance on my sex drive or general hormone levels and how I feel? I guess it is different for everyone, but I would be very interested to hear if this is something that other women recommend. I probably have another 10 years or so before the menopause and I want to make the most of them! I have been in a relationship for about 3 years, although i'm beginning to think that it might not last much longer. Anyway any advice on this issue is appreciated, it's a pretty big decision!

My understanding is the only time there's an afterwards effect is if you have the full hysterectomy. Getting your tubes tied doesn't change or remove any of your anatomy other than tying up your fallopian tubes so no eggs pass through. You may go through an adjustment with coming off the birth control, but I wouldn't think you would have any other problems. Although if you are sure you don't want kids, another alternative is to have your tubes cut instead of tied. When they are tied there is still that small percentage of a chance you can get pregnant.. I know someone who had that happen to them.

Thank you, I didn't know there was a difference with having tied or cut. But it seems strange that nothing else is affected, that is what the doctor said, but I was hoping that maybe someone has had the operation, and can tell me what it was like.

I'm only 26 so i've got a few years. I can see myself getting it done after I have kids though.. Bc is such a pain!!
I think the reason nothing is affected is because tying your tubes does not change your body. You still ovulate.. You still have your period.. And you still are producing hormones.
