Hi everybody, my name is kathleen, i'm 19 and i've been epileptic for about two years now. Just about two weeks ago, I had my first myclonic jerk in my sleep so my doctor increased my pills. Now i'm on an increased dosage of keppra and tegretol, 800 mg of tegretol a day and 2000 mg of keppra a day. I've always been pretty tired while on the med's but since the increased dosage, I can't even make it through the whole day without napping! And being a student doesn't make it easier. My mom seems to think it's because I never get enough sleep but I can get 8 hours or more of sleep and still be tired. How can I explain to my mom that I get plenty of sleep (although sometimes I don't) but i'm just always tired? She's pretty pissed off about my sleeping habits but I can't help it.
~kathleen Cool
p.S. I usually have grand or petite mal seizures as well as partial ones. The myclonic seizures are new for me

Hi kathleen,
I am 43 and had epilepsy all my life, I am currently on 1200mg tegretol,400mg dilantin and 2400mg nuerontin daily. I have been on keppra before and it really knocked me about ,couldnt think straight,co ordination was poor, feeling tired and I felt like a wieght was on my shoulders and my head in a cloud/fog, which I hadnt experienced since taking mysoline many years ago. It could be that the keppra is whats making you feel so tired . I have found the tegretol to be a stabiliser for me and is not too intrusive on my life. You said your docgtor has changed your dosage , are you seeing a family doctor or do you have a nueroligist ? A nuerologist is far more qualified and up to date about anti epileptic medications, and because of thier scope of knowledge ,has a better idea on what tablet to trial on you ,as not all tablets suit everyone.

Sleep is important when you have epilepsy ,a regular 6-8 hrs a night can help avoid turns as does staying off alcolhol which can be another trigger for turns. Shocked
hope this helps you kathleen, keep in touch and whenever you have a question im sure there is someone in the forum who willl try and help.

Good luck Cool
