to Hysterectomy Or Not.

I have just turned 50 and have suffered for some time from irregular, v. Heavy, sparse or continuous periods, on a couple of occasions there was up to 5 months between them, occasionally they have lasted for more than a week prior to february last.

In february I was admitted to hospital with a severe pain in my right flank going down my abdomen on the right. Within 1 day of this pain I noticed a green vaginal discharge. The medics seemed to ignore this at the time and treated me for kidney problems. Since then I had a ct scan, pelvis ultrasound, renal ultrasound, upper abdominal ultrasound, renal tract x-ray, ivp & colposcopy none of which have been able to detect any problems with my kidneys or the source of the green discharge. It has not responded to penbritten, flagyl, clyndamycin (tablet or cream) or ampicillan.

It has been identified after culture to be "non specific vaginal infection"(in other words 'they don't know' imo). It may continue for up to 3 weeks at a time. Sometimes preceding a period, sometimes just out of the blue. Prior to the discharge I begin to feel very fatigued. I go on to develop a pain in my side not as severe as the initial one in february but there is also a pressure pain all over my abdomen which increases when I sit or move about. The discharge begins to show, I become quite ill with a slightly raised temp., i.E. 100.5 degrees after several hours (up to 1 day) the discharge flows freely (green, runny & profuse) this seems to relieve the pain and can then continue for days or weeks.

I have just returned from hospital after having a d & c + hysteroscopy, I am being advised at this stage that I have a prolapsed uterus and if the problem persists a hysterectomy is the next option. I really do not want my organs removed on spec. The blood flow after the d & c changed from blood to a slight watery discharge which appeared to be contaminated with blood within 7 days, when the green discharge began again.

The bleeding is an inconvenience at times but I can cope with it. Until the discharge began I sometimes went for months without any bleeding. Since february I have had either bleeding or discharge or both. One specialist has said the position of my uterus (according to her, it lies to the right side) is normal my current doctor who did the hysteroscopy said it was prolapsed although I suffer no symptoms of prolapse. Although I have been examined by several specialists since february this is the first time I have been told I have a prolapsed uterus.

The reason I presented for medical help initially was the very severe pain preceding the initial flow of green discharge (not the bleeding or any other symptoms). This is what knocks me out each time it happens, which could be every couple of weeks, having just cleared up and then just erupts again. It throws me for 3 days each time (utterly fatigued, very ill, violent headaches, pressure in my abdomen) until the discharge flows freely - it would appear as if something ruptures and I get ease and flow of the discharge.

To date regardless of all the tests, scans, smears & x-rays the medics have been unable to find its source. This is mainly why I am reluctant to consider a hysterectomy as a first option in the hope it will solve all problems.

Any opinions - anyone have a similar experience or more especially have any of you had a successful conclusion to this green discharge business. I have searched the internet but cannot find a similar experience surely there are others who have had this and have solved it!!!
