Hi. I have been diagnosed with having an
eating disorder and depression. I
started with bulimia and switched to
anorexia. I am in therapy and having a
hard time with it. Most of all I hate
the medication I am on effexor xr
(extended release). I am currently on a
225 mg but it was sedating me. My doc.
Said to switch the time I took my med's
from morning to night so I wouldn't need
constant naps and could function. I
still feel medicated all the time. I
don't think it helps my depression /
eating because I am irritated by the side
effects of effexor. Has any one else had
problems with effexor? Has any one else
felt that maybe medications are not the
best way to beat an eating disorder? I
have always been interested in natural
health, herbs and maybe even just strength
through thought and behaviour change.
Any ideas out there?

Effexor Posted: 10-18-03 10:05am
Kate_o7- I take effexor and I don't have
any problems with it except some dizzness.
The gave it to me for my fibro so I couls
have more energy. I all so take
wellbutrin for the cravings for food. The
effexor is also for depression. I guess
you could call craving sweets and eating
them till you get sick is an eating
disorder. You must be senective to drugs
i have tried other drugs like paxel and
prozac but the effexor workes better. How
long have you been taking it? I may go
away after a while. How old are you?

I Have Been On It Posted: 11-17-03 02:14am
I have been on effexor. I was on it for
about 9 months. It made me gain weight
it worked I took it at night to make me
sleep..My mom is on it and has no troubles
at all she has been on it for about 2
years I think..My nana was also on it
before. She had no trouble either..At the
moment I am taking wellburtin I just
started it about a month ago..It seems to
be working but I am having very bad mood
swings I get so pissed off for a stupied
reason.. I hope I helped you alittle
I was on effexor for over 2 years and have
taken every anti-depressant made. I'm 43
and have been bulemic since I was 14 yrs.
Old. I am currently drug free and am
holding my own with the eating disorder.
I think using the drugs long-term are
worse than the disease itself. You feel
great at first but then, for me, the
drugs took on the opposite effect and I
would have to change meds. I gained
weight with some which made me depressed
even more which made my eating disorder
worse. I decided I would tackle this on
my own, and with counseling. I have been
a vegetarian for 2.5 yrs. And eat much
healthier. I take vitamins, minerals,
and herbs and I feel great!! Once my
body was cleaned out and was being fed
properly, I didn't crave the carbs or
sweets that made me binge. I read a lot
on toxins and it was a real eye opener for
me. Drugs whether perscribed by a
physician or not take a real toll on your
body. When I started looking at being
healthy: mind, body, and soul, I started
feeling better. It was very difficult
for me to get off effexor, so if you do
decide that's not for you, be sure to ask
your doctor to help you get off the med.

My daughter (15) was diagnosed as anorexic
despite being atypical in many ways &
it took us 7 months to find a dr who would
look at her as a person not just say oh,
girl, teenage, weight loss= anorexia
nervosa or bulimia. In fact my daughter
has some imbalances in proteins & so
on(i'm not a dr!!) & just needs to get
these back into balance!!
Look up tryptophan, serotonin, prolactin,
stress, & other links you'll find.
Weight loss can be caused by
sooooooooooooooooo many things it is
horrifying & if your diagnosis is
wrong then you aren't likely to get
better.

I have always
resisted medication because I wanted to
recover as naturally as possible. For a
while I took prozac but it made no real
difference. I've been both anorexic &
bulimic for 30 years (i'm 41). I'm just
now discovering new ways to help myself.
1) eating regular, balanced, low-fat,
high-fiber meals. (it's amaxing how my
body stops wanting to binge when I allow
it to have adequate nutrition. Yet i'm
not getting fat --- i'm getting stronger,
in better shape than ever before in my
life).
2) exercising sensibly. (i do yoga and I
walk for 1/2 hour or more daily. I used
to overexercise --- lots of crazy
calisthenics & aerobics ---now I work
out but not to burn calories as much as
relieve stress and calm my moods).
I read alot about nutrition &
exercise. You may want to check out
ayurvedic medicine --- it's an indian
tradition that recommends special foods
for specific body types. I've found it
helpful. Good luck!
