Q: Unexplainable Breakthrough Bleeding

Hi everyone...... I'm on ortho tri-cyclen low and last month I had an episode of breakthrough bleeding about 2 weeks before my period, and I think it might have been due to forgetting to take one pill on time later in the cycle. I called planned parenthood to see what I needed to do, and they told me to continue taking my pills as I normally would being sure to take the missed pill and everything would be fine. 2 weeks after the breakthrough bleeding I ended up getting my period as usual but it was shorter.

Earlier today I noticed some very light breakthrough bleeding, and i'm really scared... I've been taking my pills as i'm supposed to and I haven't missed any, so I don't understand why this is happening. Is there a good possibility that i'm pregnant? I've also been sick twice this month and have been under considerable stress, and I didn't know if that had anything to do with it either... Either way, I wanted to ask what the cause of this might be before I jump to conclusions.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Nicole

It's ok, i'm pretty sure you're not pregnant. How long ave you been on ortho tri cyclen lo? If its only been a few months, say 1-6 then perhaps you're body is still adjusting. If you've been on it awhile and this is the first time it's happened then maybe you just need your hormones changed and you need to get a new pill. I'd say missing the pill explain your first breakout. This one could be because of any number of things. And stress could have been the reason it happened. Stress causes hormone levels to change which just knocks things out of wack. So take a deep breath and calm down. Also, whenm you were sick, were you vomiting? If you were it could mean that your body didn't absorb all of the pill and that's what's causing it.

Whatever it is, hopefully it will clear up by itself. If it doesn't, take a otc test to make sure you aren't pregnant and then see if you need a new pill.

Thanks for the reassurance cassie. Smile I got freaked out enough that I called planned parenthood this evening instead of waiting until tomorrow morning... I've been on the pill since january, and since I was sick a few weeks ago, the women I spoke to said the antibiotic I was on could have caused the irregular bleeding. She said irregular bleeding is a very common occurance with ortho tri cyclen lo... I'm just not used to experiencing it myself. I'll definately be taking a pregnancy test if I don't get my period toward the end of the month.
