Hip Pain And Replacements
I just turned 40 and had been having tremendous pain in my right hip. I am extremely active in sports (basketball, kick fit, etc). The doctor requested me to stop doing any high impact sports and after further reviewing my X-rays said the replacement was inevitable.
This news came down about 4 months ago and since I have stopped all impact sports and mostly everthing else. I have always looked forward to a challenge and for the most part that challenge was about (no pain no gain). This is totally different. Mentally this is very tough. Just venting and I appreciate you listening.

38 With Total Double Hip Replacement
I'm 38 years old male. Very active now. I was very athletic up until about 5 years ago when hip pain got the best of me. I had surgery in April of 2006 both hip replacements at the same time.
Best thing I ever did. I'm back to working out playing golf, playing softball. I'm doing a mini triathlon in April.

Any Thoughts On Elliptical Machines After Hip Replacement?
Hello all, I had a complete hip replacement, with both metal & ceramic. I'm thrilled and should have done it a LONG time ago. I was born with congenital hip dysplasia, and this is a miracle to me.

I want to exercise, and my husband & I have considered getting an elliptical machine. Any thoughts on using one of those after replacement?

Re: Hip Replacement and much we can exercise
Well I'm glad I found this site too but thinking maybe I should be a little more careful. I just had my second hip replacement this past February. All is well and I feel great. Maybe too great because I still want to do it all. I have been biking and swimming and walking and doing stretching exercises and sit ups in the evening. I'm wondering now if I possibly stirred something up with the first hip I got replaced last year as I'm finding now if I put my weight on that leg for too long a time it becomes very painful and I sometimes have trouble walking until it seems to just work it's way out. Anyone else experience this? Thanks for all the advise. I will not be taking up tennis I guess.

scared to have hip replacement surgery
I am a 46 year old woman, that has been suffering from horrendous pain in my left hip for over 4 years. I am told that I have hip dysplasia, and osteoarthritis. I can no longer do anything, walking is a constant struggle. I cannot bend down, I cannot even put on my own left shoe and sock...even getting on pants and undergarments is a horrible struggle. I am scheduled to have minimally invasive total hip replacement surgery in september of 2008, it is going to be metal on metal. But I am terrified. I am scared of what to expect. And also being the metal on metal transplant is fairly new, and there is some wear......I am concerned about the metal ions causing me to get cancer. What can someone tell me about the procedure, the pain, the recovery, how I will feel, handle it, and what about the metal ions? thank you for any response

hip replacement surgery and exercise afterwards
I am now 3 months into a double hip replacement and finding things so much better than before although I still have a little stiffness. I am just getting back into exercising and am raring to go as I used to be an aerobics instructor until about a year ago.I also enjoy weight training and am slowly incorperating mainly upper body exercises. I would love to do some form of aerobic class but am not sure if this is possible, any one have any ideas? At the moment I am just going by how my body feels. Also on using a power plate, before I had my op, I was in a gym that had one of these and it had a notice above it specifying that it was not to be used by people with hip and knee problems and replacements.

Why do my legs feel so odd while I'm sleeping?
I have been told by surgeons that I need a hip replacement, but until recently I could still do most things accompanied by pain. But now I have very odd sensations in my thighs and sometimes entire leg all night long. Is this nerves being squeezed by inflammation or what? Also how do you decide on type of hip to have implanted?

Exercise
I've had both hips replaced, totally, 4 and 6 years ago. I am a 65 year old male, 5'10", 220 lbs. I used to jog regularly ( 4 mi/day ) and loved raquetball/handball, lifting weights, golf, and occasionally softball. I've become 50 lbs overweight, trying to exercise enough to get a good sweat going and a heart rate in the 130's. Does anyone have suggestions how this can be accomplished and not cause problems with the hips?

thanks...........fitchie

exercise and hip replacement.
I have been advised that swimming and aqua fitness are good exercises if you need to do something aerobic to loose some weight, although not to swim breast stroke, this takes any pressure of your joints, You can also use a cross trainer or bicycle.

Exercise and Hip Replacement
I had hip replacement on 01/21/2007. I weigh virtually the same now as then, I can bench 300# an dI work out daily. I do yoga, swimming, and wlaking as my exercise, as well as upper body weights. I eat healthy (natural proteins and foods), and I stay committed to an active lifestyle. I'm 53 and have congential dysplasia, so the replacement is a blessing. I was a former marathoner and triathlete. No running is a bummer, but pre-THR, there was no running and even walking was painful. Have a plan1

Is this common for after six weeks.
I had my surgery on December 17, 2008. Now six weeks later I still feel pain when I walk without my cane (which causes me to limp). Though I am experiencing 100% less pain when sitting, than I did before surgery. I still wonder if I'm expecting too much for six weeks? When did everyone else experience their pain disappearing when walking. I'm exercising doing the elliptical and the exercises suggested by the therapist. And is it okay to use the recumbent cycle after six weeks? Thanks I just wanted to the time frame to measure my progress.

Pain without cane
I had my surgery on December 16 2008. I am now walking more without the cane, but sometimes I have a little pain.I guess a little bit is to be expected,it is a little worse in the evening. My biggest trouble walking without the cane, is the limp that I have because of the leg length difference. Once I have my other hip replaced in March this should be corrected.

Range of Motion
I had total hip replacement (Birmingham metal on metal)on January 6, 2009 and wondered about range of motion. After 3 months, I still cannot put on my sock or tie a shoe. I wondered if anyone found improvement of the hip's range of motion? If so, how much did it improve and when? I see my orhtopedist next week and I will find out if he lifts my restriction of 90 degrees at hip. I'm enjoy sea kayaking, but find it difficult getting in and out of a kayak at this point.

I am 76 now and I had a left hip total replacement 3 years ago. Prior to my surgery, I worked out just about every day, the last few years doing step aerobics. Prior to that I was a runner. Since my hip replacement, I have taken up cycling. I do spinning (stationary bike) just about every day and ride my road bike every weekend about 30 miles. I have also gone on 50 mile rides. So far, no problems.

Pls Help!!!
Hello everyone, I'm 35 and due for a hip replacement in 3 weeks time. I've been reading a lot about it but am still scared and worried about my recovery. I'm not really an active person as the pain has slowed me down and I haven't been consistent with my exercises. How can I prepare for the surgery now by exercising? Will it help? What sort of exercises can I do to strengthen the muscles around the hip and legs? How about post-surgery and recovery? What kind of exercises can I do then to help me recover faster? I'm really worried about this. Can you please help tell me. Thanks.

dear ssi
8 months after my hip replacement i feel like a bigshot. i was SO SCARED before having it done. i found myself crying just thinking about it. as far as exercises beforehand, ask your orthopedist. i was in such pain, i couldnt lift my leg, i could hardly walk, everything was too painful. after having it done, the surgery pain was much less than the pain i experienced beforehand. the body heals in an amazing way. i went to rehab where everyone knew exactly how to make me strong. i went from a walker, to a cane in no time and quickly to using no walking aides. right after the surgery, there were nights i couldnt get my leg back into bed. the nurses were wonderful.. i did need some pain meds for the first week and then nothing.. let me know how you are doing. and good luck.
