Hi everyone,
this is my first post to this group. Hope
everyone is well. I have a few questions
about my dental health. I’ve had bad
teeth all of my life. They have white
& yellow blotches on them (mainly the
front teeth) and I have a terrible time
keeping them healthy. The dentist I used
to go to said it was really not my fault.
My mom has bad teeth, as do both of my
sisters. I normally brush 2-3 times a
day, and use act fluoride rinse a couple
times a day. Someone even told me if I
do this too much, I might even be
worsening the problem because of too much
fluoride.. Is this true? My teeth still
seem to be decaying, and they look
terrible. I saw a dentist a couple months
ago, got some fillings, and was scheduled
to go again for more work, but a lot of
things happened (mom had health problems,
dad had a heart attack, etc) so I have not
been back since, but I am just frustrated
by the health of my teeth. On my two
front teeth, I can actually put my tongue
behind each tooth, and I can see the tooth
get darker, almost as if the tooth is
nearly see through. I have been using
a&h enamel care, and I also have a
prescription toothpaste called previldent,
which was prescribed by my first dentist.
I don’t know if either are making any
difference, but I am using them both. My
bottom teeth (near the gumline) are
probably my teeth in the worst shape. I
was told to lay off the sugary drinks,
etc, which I have, and even after
drinking, I normally wash my mouth out
with water or something. For someone
like me, how many times should I be
brushing and using the act fluoride rinse?
What kind of toothpaste? I am going to
be seeing a dentist again soon hopefully,
but I just thought I would ask for
suggestions because I don’t know if I am
hurting my teeth or harming them anymore..
Lol. I’ve even thought about it being
some kind of mineral deficiency, but I
doubt that. I’m just 21, and it just
seems really early to be having problems
with my teeth.
Thanks,
jason

Hi,jason. You cannot hurt your teeth by
using flouride rinse and prescription
tooth paste.I would use the prescription
tooth paste exclusively and use the rinse
as well. You cannot get too much flouride
once your teeth are formed. The spotting on
your teeth could be caused by too much
flouride as a child when your teeth were
developing. It sounds like you have a lot
of dental work to be done and you have to
just bite the bullet and get it done
before you cannot restore them. There are
often payment plans available just for
dental care.Talk to your dentist and get a
comprehensive(complete)exam and a
treatment plan.Tell the financial person
what you can afford per month and set up
appointments and keep them!I know you had
some family problems in the past, but you
need to take care of your teeth
soon.Neglected decay can cause other
problems down the road.Best of luck to
you!Patty

I agree with patty. There is a such
thing as deficiencies in teeth. I had a
patient in my chair once that was born
with no enamel, or either the enamel that
she did have went away. Anyways, she
had all of her teeth crowned-as a child!
Anything is possible and you do need to
get started on a treatment plan with a
good dentist that will take care of all of
your needs. There are also certain
agencies that only finance dental work, or
as patty said, maybe the dental office
that you go to will help you with
financial arrangements. If you have any
other questions, just ask! by
the way, I hope your dad is doing well.

Thanks for the info. I will definitely
start using the toothpaste and flouride.
How many times a day should I brush with
the prescription toothpaste?

Brush at least twice a day, three would be
better.Never go to bed without brushing
and flossing.Whatever you ate throughout
the day is on and in between your teeth
and if left overnight, the bacteria will
have a field-day.If you are not a
flosser, try to start out with doing it 2
times a week,gradually increasing until
you do it every night.Once your teeth are
restored,flossing will keep them healthy
and protect your investment!Best of luck
to you!Patty
