Ob/gyn Vs Midwife
Posted: 08-30-04 11:04am

I live in toronto, ontario and midwives are covered under our provincial healthcare so i've got a choice between midwife or ob/gyn for my prenatal care.

I've talked it over with some friends who've had kids in the past few years and i'm planning on going with the care of a midwife.

Just wondering what other people's experiences have been with either ob/gyn or midwife.

I'm on my first pregnancy and using an ob in the .U.S. I don't have any experience with midwives, but not knowing anything about them, I feel more comfortable with an ob.

I have an ob/gyn... I've heard midwives are a nice source of support but if something goes wrong they cant help and you have to go to an obgyn anyway. It just seems safer with an obgyn to me.

With the practice I went to, they had 4 ob/gyn's, 2 midwives, and a nurse practitioner. You saw everyone while u were pregnant so no surprises no matter who was on call. There is always 1 doctor on call and sometimes a midwife. When I had my son, my ob was on call but also a midwife I liked. The midwife came in and asked if I was ok with her delivering the baby and I said yes. Everything went just fine, but had something gone wrong then I had a dr there in the labor and delivery ward capable of performing a c-section. I really like midwives but I would go ahead with an ob/gyn just to be safe. Or maybe look for a practice that has both like mine did.
