Q: Smoking, Acid, Soda What???

Hello.

First off I would like to define the problem. I feel a very irritating pain and burning in my throat. I did go and see a doctor and he associated this with the stomach > acid reflux.

He prescribed me something
stronger than ranitidine 150mg; in this case it is prilosec (i used to take ranitidine as a result of side effect of paxil, which I haven't taken for two years)

i use to feel a strong pressure in my chest after
eating something. After taking prilosec that has somewhat
gone away.

I do smoke and I feel that this is increasing my condition
(i find it hard to quit smoking, but I will try), however,
even my doctor didn't quite blame that as the "main" cause,
although he suggests that I have to quit smoking for
general wealth (i smoke about 1 pack a day maybe a bit
more - marlboro reds, and some lights mixed up).

I also drink a lot of soda and coffee with a lot of sugar
(diet soda more than 3-4 glasses a day - coffee just one
glass, water probably 1 glass also). (drinking water
actually gives me heartburns, while soda does not)

my main issue is that I feel some itching and burning in my
mouth, mostly near that "adam's apple" on the lower side
and strangely in the back of my head, at the end of the
nose "channel" (more like scrapping). That has appeared
recently, although I have had some minor itches and
pressure in lower part of my throat also for 2 months.

Drinking tea smoothens this out but it also builds some
pressure. Same applies for example for coffee, and the
general feeling right now is that I wouldn't preffer eating
something sweet or cold.

I am not too worried about this but it annoys me that it
has been somewhat lengthy. I even began to think it might
be cancer coming up (i am 28, slightly overweight) as I am
not sure (truth.Com tv - presumption from a guy that talked about his father who died of a throat cancer).

Burping helps but not as much (right now it's like constant burning in the throat which is not at the unbearable state) as it did before.

The pain tends to go away while I eat something warm. We had strange weather in chicagoland these days, I may have gotten a cold or alergies.

I am not coughing (for the 10 years of smoking I have caughed a few days only throughout a course of my life)

what you might think, I am looking at some second opinions?

Ideas
It could be a hiatal hernia

the best thing is to avoid foods that decreease the spincter tone from your esophagus to your stomach like caffeine, mint, nicotine, chocolate, hot peppers...Basically all of the good stuff or just cut down on that stuff

the best thing is to raise the head of the bed when you sleep, some use cinderblocks

you would be suprised how often a little gas can hurt also, try some perrier or any bubbly water (i like the lime flavor!) or some simethicone (the stuff in maalox or gas-x)

have you tried any of the above???
