Hi,

i've recently been told I have tmd by a chiropractor who went on to manipulate my jaw. The reason I saw the chiro in the first place was because of neck stiffness and to a lesser extent jaw aching. He's been working on my neck for about 6 sessions and my neck has started making an improvement. Unfortunately a couple of weeks ago he started working on my jaw and i'm writing this to ask people here if what he did sounds like a good idea or whether it was a bad idea.

Up until he started treating my jaw the only problems I had was an ache. Now that he has treated my jaw the ache is still there but now my jaw clicks and my teeth seem to be too close together at the back. They chatter when I try to go to sleep and I am constantly aware that my teeth are closer together. It makes speech difficult and causes more jaw ache as i'm contantly trying to keep my teeth apart. It also aches on one side of my jaw whenever I yawn.

The manipulations he did were as follows:

with a gloved hand he pressed and held for 1 minute the muscles on my cheek from inside of my mouth. On the first sitting he also put his palm on my right cheek and dragged sharply down a couple of times. He has also gotten me to put my fingers on my lower teeth while he puts a mechanical pulse through my fingers and onto my jaw using what he calls an activator or actuator - can't remember.

My question is "has he caused my tmd to become worse?" if there are any chiropractors out there who can comment that would be great because at the moment I am contemplating cancelling my next appointment and i'm getting very worried about my jaw.

Thanks

trust your chiro---things get worse and then get better---that is usually the run tof things.

I've now had my third treatment - each is different, as he said it would be. He is into the cranio-sacral type tretment and is also adjusting the pelvis... As of now, and maybe wishful thinking - but I do not have the debiitating pain..... I still have pain, but it seems manageable?!?!? Also - I still have the loud crepitus and ear pain, and pain in front of the ear - both sides.... he feels it is muscular and said that unless there was an accidnet of some type, then it is muscular..... But then why this click and ear pain and crunching when I "rotate " my jaw.... I've been trying to baby the jaw as well....

the reason its different every time is that things stay in place and other things are coming out---its a process----i wouldnt say that if there was no accident than its muscular---i had problems before the accident---it was a skeletal problem. you never really can tell.
