Virus Going Around-important
Posted: 08-19-04 12:01pm

I just got an email from a friend saying that if you get an email that says anything about 9/11 or wtc (world trade center) not to open it! I guess it is some virus that will delete your whole c drive. (this is the very short version of the email!) just so you girls know. I dont ever open emails unless I know the person, and I am sure you girls don't either, but just to be safe!

Something that i've encountered that you should also watch out for is e-mails that supposedly look like they are from people you know that contain attachments. If the attachment puts the e-mail in the 120 to 180 kbyte range, even though the sender might have one of your contact's names, pay close attention to the subject line. If it doesn't make sense, just delete the e-mail. Don't open the attachment!

Yes, some of the viruses...Oh how do I say this.
The virus will also be automatically sent to everyone in your address book. Does that make sense?

But, but, windows xp is pretty. It doesn't have those boring gray bars and it has color! Does linux have color?

Here are a couple of examples:

To bd1012: the really colorful mode on xp actually takes up a lot of memory. Your computer will run faster if you change your desktop to classic mode.

To linuxchique: linux is the operating system of choice among the asu computer science graduate students. Linux is the greatness!

I'm kinda scared to make a switch. Will we lose anything when we switch?

The switch to linux? You can back up all your files, but you'll have to learn new programs. Most windows programs don't work on linux, linux has different versions of everything, but most of them are free! There's at least a free version of everything.

Do you mean when you switch to classic mode? No, it just changes the way the task bar, the start menu, and program windows look. It will look more like old school 2000 or '98.

Indeed. Linux has a very cool clone of winamp. Plus there's always gaim if you need a messenger.

Oh yeah the winamp clone is truly a clone! If you cant read that it doesn't actually say winamp, you'd think it was! There is no difference whatsoever, and many of the winamp skins still work! Lol! Lets see - here are some common programs for windows and the linux counterpart:

winamp -> xmms
aim -> gaim
yahoo -> ymessenger (still made by yahoo)
ms office -> open office or star office (made by sun)
ms money -> gmoney
internet explorer -> mozilla firebird or galeon
ms outlook -> evolution or mozilla thunderbird
video player -> mplayer
audio editor -> audacity
