After numerous bouts with utis the urologist has prescribed a daily preventive dosage of 50 mg. Of macrodantin. My primary care physician has said that this is risky and objects to it although I continue to take it. I do not want to return to the misery and inconvenience of ongoing infections. I am allergic to sulfa so that is not a viable option. Am I safe in taking the macrodantin indefinitely or for the rest of my life? I am a 65 year old female. Thank you for any enlightenment you are willing to share.

I have been taking 100mg of macrodantin for approx 10 years and have never had any health concerns from the medication. I would suggest that you get your blood pressure checked every 6 months as this could be affected.

Macrodantin And Urinary Infection
I have had an urinary infection for almost two years and I have been on antibiotics off and on. I have had every test they can think of...I think and all they found so far is a stone in my left kidney which for a long time they refused to consider as the cause of my problem. I was put on 100 mg of macrodantin and the first week I slept almost 24/7. The second week I managed to stay awake a while during the day. I am retired. The third week I went into respiratory distress and ended up in er. I had a breathing treatment and came home with an inhaler. After a couple weeks of not taking the macrodantin or any other antibiotic I am back on track but of course the infection is also very much alive. Tomorrow 03/14/05) I am having extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy to see if we can get rid of the stone and get me back to my old self which was a young and active 77 year old with a bit of emphysema (treated with theophylline). I have had bouts of mucus and blood in my urine off and on during this ordeal. I will let you know how this comes out if you care.
