Hi ppl, I have had acid reflux for about a year now and been on losec. I still feel like my throat is closing in and unable to swallow food, even difficult to swallow my own salivia is a challenge. I was diagnosed with a motility problem, which means my digestive muscles are not strong enough. But my question is can anxiety make my acid reflux worse?

Cheers... Twisted Evil

Unfortunately it can.. Anxiety can make your muscles tense up .. And when your abdominal and/or stomach muscles tense up in can cause reflux. It's no fun, I know.. I have bad gerd myself.

Thanks for your reply? Do you have difficulty swallowing? I feel like there's so much pressure put on my throat when I swallow? I'm just trying to figure out if it's a physical or mental ailment that I have...

I usually do not have trouble swallowing, but I can get a "lump" in my throat in which I feel like there is constantly something there. Has your doctor done and endoscopy to look at your throat to see if there is excessive irritation or damage? If your reflux was bad enough you may just have a badly irritated throat. If you haven't had one done may want to ask them about it. If your throat is clear you may want to try going back on anxiety medicine. If it helps then you will have your answer. Good luck.

I've had all the symptoms you talk about. The difficulty in swallowing (dysphagia) is the one that always freaked me out the most. And it finally pushed my doc to take action. Two years ago I had a nissen fundoplication - surgery to correct tighten the lower esophageal sphincter, thus preventing the reflux. Turns out I also had a hiatal hernia, which he fixed as well. I highly recommend this procedure to gerd sufferers. (i couldn't even bend over without food coming back into my mouth from my stomach). Now, i'm 90% better. I take 1 zantac a day and am happy! No reflux, no indigestion. Good luck.
