Q: Lower Abdominal Pain-please Help!

I am a 35-year old woman who has been experiencing lower abdominal pain since 7-3-04. (it began suddenly.) the pain is localized below the navel. (the area is about the size of a closed palm centered at the navel and extending downwards.) the first two weeks the pain was unbearable, and I was unable to sleep. The pain was more intense in the early a.M. Hours. The pain went away completely for about 5 days and then came back. Then it was manageable for several days. (pain was periodic.) but- for the last 3 days the pain has been constant and quite painful. If pain is present, it’s almost always present in the morning. My stomach will also sometimes make gurgling noises. When the pain was at it’s worst, the noises were loud. I have no other related symptoms, such as fever, constipation, diarrhea, or nausea. My bowel movements and appetite are fine. I was in china on vacation for 1 week in late may.

I went to the er on 7-11-04 and the docs concluded that fibroids were causing my pain. (i had a 7 cm. Ovarian cyst surgically removed in 04/2003). I’ve seen several obgyn’s and had urine/blood tests, ct-scan, ultrasounds, and an mri. All the tests came out negative. The mri did show small fibroids, but the last obgyn concluded that fibroids are not the cause of my pain. (my uterus is fine.)

i’m really frustrated b/c my pain continues and my docs haven’t found the source.

-what could be causing my pain????

Could you have endometriosis? That is quite painful. That is all I can think of. I would think irritable bowel syndrome, but you said you have no other symptoms so I am not sure of that. Ask your doctor about both of these things, and good luck to you.

I don't know what doctor told you that fibroids are not causing your pain. They can cause pain. Hotasfrick is also right, endometriosis could also be the culprit and it can not be seen with an ultra sound. The only way the doctors can see endometriosis is to insert an endoscope through a small insision in your abdoman or right below your belly button or to just plain open you up. I had both and I was in alot of pain for almost a year until I had a hysterectomy. I understand your pain. It is a horrible thing for a woman to go through but you must go see a good doctor and see what can be done for you. There is a shot that they can give you that will shrink fibroids and also do something for the endometriosis. It is called lupron depot. This shot will stop your period for as long as you are on it which is usually 6 months, but once you stop the shot you will have the same problems over again. This shot will also make you go through menapause. I also experience low sex drive and moodswings. I also could no long lubricate myself. I had to use k-y jelly for intercourse at all times. You should talk to your friends and see if they can recommend a good gyn so you can find out if you have the same problems I had.

Lower Abdominal Pain
Thanks for the info. I went to see another obgyn last week and he did a thorough pelvic exam, read all my test results, and he concluded as did my obgyn, that I most likely do not have endo. He concluded that my pain is not originating in the pelvis. I'll be seeing a gi next week. My stomach makes these gurgling noises and my doc listened to my stomach and there's a lot of bowel movement. We'll soon see what is causing my problems.

Also, my fibroids are really small (2 cm. Or smaller). This obgyn I saw from ucla doesn't seem to think that my fibroids are causing my pain. The mri didn't show anything out of the ordinary as far as the fibroids are concerned.

I've read about lupron. It's a horrible drug!! It has such terrible side effects.
