Ok im trying to upgrade my moms dumb computer to windows xp... Shes got windows 98 right now, and xp was only $99 so she decided she wanted to upgrade until she is able to get a new computer. Ok well this thing keeps popping up that says "the option to upgrade will not be available at this time because setup was unable to load the file f:\1368\win9xupg\w95upg.Dll" "a device attatched to the system is not functioning.".... And then another one pops up after I click ok that says " setup cannot continue because upgrade functionality is disabled and your copy of windows only allows upgrades"... What in the world does all this bs mean!?! Ok with my moms computer, she has a compaq presario and it has a cd-rom drive thing, and it has a recordable drive thing so then you can burn cds... Well the cd-rom one doesnt work, and it hasnt since we got the computer. So we use the recordable drive for cd-rom crap and it works just fine. It has always worked with installing things before and worked just fine with everything else too. But could this be the problem? Grr is this computer always going to suck? Or is this problem with the disc since we never had a problem like this before? Lol do you even know anything what this crap could possibly mean? You seem to know ~alot~ about computers so I hope you can help me once again since im dumb lol.

Update On Computer
Ok well I just got done installing a sims game for my sister, and to see if it was the drive that wasnt working... Well the drive works just as good as it did before, so I dont know whats up with that. Well my mom looked at the peice of paper that I wrote down what the messages were saying so I could ask you and she said "oh its a .Dll file.." and I asked her why and she said that a while back ago something about a virus wiping out .Dll files or something, or a virus infecting a .Dll file.... I dunno what any of that crap means lol.. I never even heard of .Dll until now. But I guess when she had her friends husband come and fix her computer once he said she got a virus, and something about a .Dll file. Confused

A dll file is a dynamic link library which is a piece of computer code that can be shared by many different programs. They come with windows, so you can't download them by themselves. You have two options:

1) find someone with your version of windows and try to get them to find that file on their computer and copy it to the same place in your computer
2) give up and buy the $199 version of win xp which would be the full version and wouldn't require you to already have any files.

If 1 doesn't work, you are stuck with 2.

There is a chance a file from win xp will work, but if not, try one from win 98 like you have now. It might have to be from win 98.

Ok my mom has this compaq quick restore disk, to re-boot her computer or whatever and reformat the hard drive. I dont really want to use this disk, but I will if it will fix the problem... I will have to take all of the pictures off of the computer and everything and put them on disk... Right lol? Do you think I would be better off doing this?

Yeah... If you wanna get xp on without copying the file from somebody else, that would probably work.

Ok, do you think it would fix other little petty problems that this computer has?

Its possible, but not likely. Re-installing or upgrading to xp is likely to do more fixing than just getting that dll file back.

We just restored our computer and now most of the problems are gone, like spyware, and all the little things that downloaded without our permission. That should work.
