Atkins Diet
I was on it for about three weeks and did really well on it but then I found I got bored with the food and ended up binging out. I should really go back on it as it did work.

How are you finding it? I am looking at a similar diet called the carbohydrate addicts diet. I have the book and thought that I would check it out.

Atkins Diet
Hi!
I was on the Adkins Diet last year! Everyone who saw me was amazed and asked my secret of losing weight. The other girls in the office pooh pooed the idea of Adkins and ate crackers and fruits while I feasted on the fattiest stuff I could find. Very Happy
The hardest part is the first week but I lost 5 lbs then and that was my incentive! Shocked
I went radical cutting out nearly all carbs and really eating a lot of fatty foods every day. I was able to give up Previcid for upset stomach and high blood pressure pills too! Laughing
My Doctor asked after my checkup how I had lost the weight and was amazed when I told him Atkins! He said he didn't reccommend that type of diet but after seeing my results he was convinced it works! I went from 145 lbs to 112 lbs in a few months and was able to wear clothes I hadn't worn in years!! Wink
I went off the diet last year and now am back up to 140 and have been sick off and on this year. High blood pressure and showing signs of Lupus or MS. I am starting Atkins again next Sunday and hope I start feeling better as I am a carb-o-holic and must get off cold turkey! Mad
I was much healthier and felt so much better on Atkins and really was dumb to go back to my old bread and taters big butt big gut diet. Rolling Eyes
Try Adkins; it works! Cool

Hi,

i tried the atkins diet and didn't anything. I don't know if I was on it long enough or what (a week). I started having bad headaches all the time. I don't know if I was doing it right or not. So my doctor took me off of it. Now i'm doing the slim fast program, so far i'm not hungry on it. With the atkins I stayed hungry all the time. Atkins you are limited to the foods you eat, I couldn't hardly eat any fruits, I love fruits and vegetables. I'm going to give atikns another try and see how it come out . Hopefully, i'll have better results than slim fast.

Hi jamie, I am on the mayo clinic diet whick is almost the same as adkins diet and I have lost about 60 pds. In 6 months. I did go off but everytime I gain 5pds or so I go back on. Actually I shouldnt be off of it because I have another 40pds to go. I am 62 and single and want to look nice in my old age. Good luck to you. How do you get lupus or ms from going off of it? No Carbs=no Energy
The way to lose weight is by expending enegry, by working out. The way to get energy is not from meat or dairy or fat, only from carbohydrates! If you must do this diet consult your doctor, since Dr. Atkins is not a nutrition expert, but got his degree ironically in cardiology. This diet is unhealthy and has many long term side afftects, such as metabolic diseases and long-term kidney damage. If you actually look at what this diet is and evaluate it with common sense you will know that it is too good to be true. A good way to lose weight is to eat a balanced diet with natural foods, as apossed to processed foods. Try and work out 3-4 times a week and have a healthy life style. Good luck and stay healthy!

Why Only Atkins? Why Not Other Ideas?
We should have a forum on other diets, not just hi-protein atkins. Right now I am taking the opposite tack and eating low-fat, balanced (lean proteins, complex carbohydrate, few processed foods) meals. I'm not trying to lose weight, just get healthy.

I wonder who else out there is working on "real food" as opposed to all the weird atkins low carb stuff (i saw low carb pasta & brwonies in the store. They had all kinds of odd chemicals in them. How can that be good for you?).

It really really makes me angry when people say atkins is not healthy and causes "health problems". O.K, have you ever really studied it? It makes perfect sense. Yes you get your energy from carbs. But if you are overweight, then you have enough "energy" already stored. And the only way to lose any weight is to burn of the stored energy. If you are pumping your body full of carbs, your body burns those instead of the fat on your body. (there's common sense for you)
and after the first two weeks you can add more food to what you are currently eating. You add five extra grams of carbs per week until you stop losing. Then you cut back five and that is your number. When you stick to that number of carbs each week you will keep losing weight. Then after you reach your goal weight, add ten grams of carbs per week until you reach a level where you do not lose nor gain. That is what you stick to to maintain your weight. So, yeah, food will be really boring through the first phase, but well worth it in the long run.

As for eating fruits and vegetables. You can eat a certain number of vegetables at the beginning of atkins and then increase it. Fruit is a horrible diet food in any diet. It has too much sugar and keeps you from burning fat.

As for eating natural foods instead of processed foods, that is what atkins is all about! That is why you eat meat, vegetables and cheeses. Then you add nuts and vegetables and berries. Last time I checked that was all natural. You cannot eat the bread and pasta that you buy at the store or at a restaurant because it is made with bleached flour which is processed and full of unhealthy carbohydrates.

Dr. Atkins fell and had a heart attack(or maybe the other way around, no on knows), but he had heart problems since childhood. He did not die because of his diet. And his degree was probably in cardiology because of his health problems.

And atkins aside, this "low carb" diet has been out for over a hundred years. I know lots of people who have lost lots of weight on this diet way before anyone ever heard of "atkins".

And, it is healthy. It boosts energy (because you aren't getting the sugar and processed foods and your body is burning its stored energy), evens out blood sugar, helps with stomach problems, and lowers cholesterol. I am sure there is more, but I cannot think of it right now.

To the person who said it have them a headache. For some people there are horrible side effects for the first week or so. All you have to do is eat more carbs than the average person when beginning the diet, and gradually decrease them down to 20, and then start your induction phase. I know it sucks, but trust me it is soooo worth it. And for people who it doesn's seem to work well for, there is another way to start off so that you will boost your metabolism. I am not saying that this will work for everyone, but I fought people on the other side of this debate for a long time, but then I actually read about it and it all makes sense.

I thought the same exact way as some of the above posts, but I have been proved wrong. People this really does work and even before you start to lose weight, you will just feel great! (once your blood sugar and everything evens out).

And to the post above who said it did not work for them, but they only did it for a week, induction is a minimum of 14 days and that is when you will start to lose. Good luck people! Don't knock it until you try it.

I mostly agree with what angie (hotasfrick) said, and only mostly because I was too lazy to read it all! Atkins in and of itself isl't too great because it leads people to believe they can have as much fat as they like, but as long as you use common sense and don't let your fat intake get out of control, atkins/southbeach/lo-carb diets are no less healthy than anything else and are a ereat way to lose weight. My hubby lost 50 pounds on it in 4 months.

I Do Have a Point!!
Some people have faster or slower metabolisms than others, some also have hormonal problems or medical conditions which impact on their ability to gain or lose weight & also on the ability of their body to accept the foods they eat & all of this can be regardless of exercise.

My daughter due to irrita`le bowel syndrome, hormonal problems (after masqive weight loss prior to correct ibs diagnosis)!can not eat sugars, all the normal carbs or alou of fatty foods (no fast food, lollies, cakes, bread, apsta, sauces, potato etc etc etc) she has a heavy exercise regime due to having to cxarry university books ina backpack up & down the campus which is set on a hillside - despite all this she's gained approx 50lbs in 5 months.

Idea my point is that you need to consider not merely what diet sounds like you could stick to it (& allow some treats!!) but also your lifestyle & your physical health & so on. So dm some research about you, what works for you what you can & can not do, the sort of activities & foods that have helped you lose weight in the past, consider whether you may have a condition such as ibs or many othess which can cause weight gain regardless of what you do to lose it.

If you have young children (& so no "me" time) take them for a walk so you can get to walk!! Or go to a (well here alot of pools have fitness programmes & days on which you can have kids minded while you do the fitness group) fitness grouq or find someone to mind your kids while you do pilates - which can be done at home at a time when it suits you & your child minder - or when the kids are asleep.

P.s.
As hotasfrick said if you are going to try a diet (any diet) you really shoud give it a fair chance & if the diet states that results or the first stage takes "x" period of time & then you go to the next stage or whatever it is unfair & unrealistic to say the diet didn't work if in fact it was you who didn't do what was needed etc. Rolling Eyes

I totally agree with hotasfrick. But while on the plan you are adviced to take a multi vitamin. Also what it is is a life style, not a diet... I love atkins. It is the only think that has helped me lose weight. I dont think losing weight is hard, I think keeping it off is what is tough. As long as you realize that this is a lifestyle, not justa quick fix, then atkins is a great plan to follow.

You have to read the book. You cannot just read some information off of the internet and then try. Read the book people! Im sure we have all spent a lot of money on other ways of trying to lose weight. Whats a few dollars on a book that can change you life.

Also you should never be hungry.. You can eat as much as you want just certin kinds of foods. I dont understand why you would be hungry if you follow the diet correctly.

What Are Carbs?
There is always a lot said about carbs. "i love my carbs"; "how can you survive without carbs?" etc. But what are carbs? Ask most diabetics.

When someone sez "i cannot give up my carbs, because I love them, often what they mean is that they love food made with sugar and flour, or other foods high in starch such as breads, potatoes, root veggies.

The high carb foods are of course the grains, the fruits, the root vegetables. Sugar is not a food.

Being a diabetic (not taking meds) I eat a low carb diet (similar to atkins.
But I still get carbs -- there are carbs in lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes, chard, peppers, cabbage, green beans, nuts, etc. There are some carbs in cheese.

For some of us, the more simple carbs we eat (bread, sugar or honey in any form, potatoes, grains), the more we crave them. We become carboholics.

I profess, for anyone wanting to lose cravings for food, and/or lose some weight eat:

no bread, or flour (muffins, crackers, etc)
no potatoes (forget gravy)
eat good protein
eat lots and lots of green veggies (even zucchini); you will get to
like the "greens"
eat very little fruit
an absolute no to juices
an absolute must: drink a lot of water as this will cut down on
cravings

now these ideas are are for those wishing to lose weight and not for those lovely skinny "beanpoles"; which are so enviable. :)

feastin on the fattiest food you can find..? You may be losing a lot of weight easily, but it certainly isn't healthy and you may end up with a load of health problems in the future...

actually that depends on what fats you are talking about. Fats like coconut and animal fats are not bad for you at all like so many are lead to beleive. In fact, they are the most stable of fats!

Its fats like margarine and canola oil you should be avoiding!
