Breastfeeding... Help!
Posted: 08-07-04 15:09pm

Hey everyone
well danica's 4 days old now... And im breastfeeding.. But the last 2-3 times ive tried to breastfeed her... She wont latch properly. She'll suck for about 5 seconds and pull away then try again and then she'll start crying and she wont go more than 5 seconds of sucking. Ive tried both breasts and she does the same on each breast. Could she have nipple confusion? In the hospital they had to give her a bottle of formula cuz at one point my breasts were too sore. How can I get her to continue breastfeeding? I dont want to give it up and im trying so hard!!! She just wont latch right and im afraid shes not getting enough. Plz help!!!!!

Hi shauna,
have you tried different holds?
I was reading about them recently and there are several ways apparently to hold the baby.
One is to hold her like you are cradling her, or hold her so her legs are further back - like under your arm. How to explain a bit like cradling her as if you were going to feed left breast but then moving her sideways so you actually use left breast.
Make sure (hey I haven't tried it yet so I don't know how it will work) she is facing your body and doesn't just have her head turned to you as this will make it difficult. Use cushions/pillows for extra support.
They say it helps to let down your milk if you apply a warm damp flannel to your breasts for a few minutes before feeding.
You need to be relaxed and comfortable first. Try squeezing (ouch) a few drops of milk and tempting her with it and encouraging.
Hope it all goes well, keep us posted (oh and tell me if my book is talking cr*p) Laughing

Yeah I agree, the only thing u could try is different positions. There should be a thing online showing some. If she wont latch properly, sence some babies just have a hardtime.. U might have to end up switchin to bottle like me but keep tryin, I wish u luck!!

Well she latched earlier today so that went well, but the last feeding session she wouldnt latch onto my right, so I tried some things (the different holds wouldnt work, she'll only feed in the cradle position for some reason) but I read somewheres to express some milk in the shower and to put it in a bowl of hot water and express it to release the engorging and it worked pretty well so im just going to wait for her to wake up and try another session and see it it works. I hope it does!

I heard of a hold that you can use. It is called the football hold. You know how football players tuck the ball under their arm? Well you hold her like that with you arm under her and support her head with your hand. I don't know if you have heard of this, but it is worht a try if you are having trouble!!! Good luck, and I hope baby danica will start eating better!

Where its like a cradle hold but moved over to the side.
I didn't understand it being called the football hold (thats why I forgot the name) cuz when we play football in the uk its what you call soccer (???) Embarassed

keep trying shauna i'm sure your perserverence will pay off.

It may be because you are engorged hun. Around the 3rd day your milk comes in and she would be 5 days old now. Once you get established with breastfeeding, your breasts wont be as engorged. Trying to suck an an engorged breast to baby is like try to suck on a basketball ya know? They are huge and round and hard! It would be hard to latch onto a basketball wouldnt it? Lol! So give it a couple more days and I bet she gets it!

Yah I figured it was engorgement so I started releasing some milk in the shower or just by pumping it, but she still wont latch today. She starts crying and gets so frustrated I feel so bad. I know how kari felt now too cuz I feel like its all my fault and that that was our bonding time Sad. Im still goin to try to keep pumping (pumping righ now lol) but hopefully ill try again later today and she'll latch Sad thanx tho.

Shauna

yeah I did try the football hold but she hates it! Maybe i'll try it again and keep trying. Thanx!
