Q: How Long Should I Wait After...

My husband and I would like to start a family with in the next year. I am currently taking ortho trycyclen- lo and have been on it for 5 years. I have never missed a pill. Before I was on bcp's, my periods were very regualr- like 28 days to the hour. It was nice. How long should I wait after finishing a pack off pills to try and concieve? Do I need to wait a month to get the hormones out of my system? (just a wives tale that I heard) also, I know that some people take pre-natals before the concieve- how soon should I be taking these before trying to concieve. I know I don't have to, but anything I can do to help the baby- i'm all for it. Thanks for the advice. :d

The recommended is usually wait about 3 months to be sure your menstrual cycle has kicked in properly and so you get an idea of when you are fertile.
Start taking folic acid anytime soon if you are coming off birth control and avoid vitamin supplements with vitamin a as this can contribute to birth defects - its best to choose a proper ante/pre natal type.

And I have heard you don't have to wait...
You can start right awayl...Just some people take a little longer because they were on the pill.

Check with your doctor always to be sure.

Sure there is nothing to say you can't try straight away but the recommended is about 3 months to ensure your emnstrual cycle has kicked back in properly and so you have a reasonable idea of when you are ovulating.

It's up to you like the ladies above said. You can get pregnant by just missing one pill during the course of taking them, so if you want to start right away, go ahead. But, as for the prenatal pills they recommend you start taking folic acid supplements like 3 months ahead of you trying to have a baby. However, like the bcp, its up to you... Just as long as you do take the vitamins to ensure a healthy baby, you can start whenever you like. Good luck on everything! Lots of baby wishes for you! Wink
