No freakin clue how to spell it! But I mean when your spine is curved. Well I have a slight curve in my spine, as long as I dont grow anymore, they said ill be fine and it wont curve worse. I pole-vaulted for a few years on the high school track team, (im graduated now), and the nurse said that might be how it got the curve, cause its hard on the back, and you must contort and stuff sometimes. Anywho, I have 2 questions.

1. Im 17, and im 5'8, what are the chances that I will grow any more?
2. I may pole-vault in college, does anyone know if this could make my spine worse?

Thanks!

Pole vaulting may or may not have caused it but continuing to polevault will definitely make it worse - for your sake & for the sake of the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ it will cost you if you do make it worse - do not pole vault anymore.

You could grow abit more - what height are other family members??

You really think pole vaultin will make it worse? Cause I definitally gonna keep doin it, but it might only be like 5 or 6 meets a year. And isurance will cover whatever I need to do right :p. My dads about 5'11-6', my bros about 6', my moms like 5'3. If I only grow a few inches, would that effect my spine?

If you can prevent surgery, don't pole-vault!!I had surgical correction for kyphosis as a teen and it was hell!!I know you must love your sport, but it is not doing you any good!!I wanted to be a jockey, but surgery took care of that.I still ride, but not competitively and no jumping Sad .There are many other things that you can enjoy, but don't harm yourself!Spinal surgery is no picnic, take it from someone who knows!!Good luck.Patty

Are You Nuts Or Just @!@!@!
Yes, it sounds like you could well grow more, but regardless of whether you grow more or not do you want to end up in a wheelchair Question , or at best in constant pain for life?? Idea that is what you're risking if you continue to pole vault!! 5-6 meets a year plus Evil or Very Mad practises!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Evil or Very Mad I can not possibly tell you how livid I am that you are being so stupid as to risk your future Evil or Very Mad - so what if insurance covers it - that won't stop the pain Exclamation or give you back the life you lost through your overwhelming immature Evil or Very Mad stupidity & Evil or Very Mad stubbornness. Evil or Very Mad

Don't be a fool.Help yourself while you can.As I said before ,spinal surgery is risky and painful and just because it is covered by insurance is not a reason to continue your sport. Are you going to college on a scholarship for pole vaulting? If so,find an alternative,if not, then you are just being foolish.

My doctor never said anything about it. And I really dont think pole vaulting gave me scholiosis, and I dont think it will make it worse. I never had any back pain during vault season, just really bad shin splints, and my lets hurt. And that 5-6 meets a season are if I dont do it in college. And there wouldnt be any practices. Theyre just all-comers meets.

Well,do what you want, but you asked our opinion. If you feel that pole-vaulting is fine ,then go ahead. If you do see a doctor and the recommendation is to stop, that's up to you.If you want advice and don't listen, that's your choice.I've had spinal surgery and had to stop doing something I truly loved for my well being. This was not an easy thing because I love to ride and would have become a jockey if I could. No insurance company would have touched me,so there wasn't a choice. You have one,to stop and do the right thing before you need surgery.Patty
