Last night I was out at a bar and I probably danced for three songs. About the time I stopped I had trouble catching my breath. I felt like I was choking! So I drank some water and it didnt help. I began to cough and gag so I left the bar immediately and told myself that I probably just needed to take a deep breath.

When I tried that I literally felt my throat constrict! I could breathe but it was very uncomfortable and I started wheezing some. I never panicked by any means but the sudden onslaught of this physical reaction really concerned me. When I finally got home my chest felt a little funny and I was still slightly weezy, and I continued to clear my throat.

The bar was not really smoky at all, and I had been in other places where smoke didnt give me problems. Im also in good shape and excercize regularly. I didnt even eat anything funny or unusual. For all I know I dont have severe allergic reactions to anything. I do have average allergies but they never provoked such a physical reaction.

The morning after my throat is sore from the coughing and I feel like I have this flem in my throat I have to clear. Is this athsma related? Does anyone know whats going on by chance? Please share!

It's Out There!
It could have been something in the air or on another person you were allergic too. Although there are a number of things that I get typical hayfever reactions too (walnut trees, rabbits), the only thing that gives me the serious asthma "i can't breathe at all" effect is horses -- or anyone who has been near horses, or any horsehair-related product. So I was once at a drinks party and suddenly couldn't breathe anymore...Turns out a few of the people there had been riding that day, and even though they were in fresh clothes it was enough. Then I was once at the shakespeare globe theatre, halfway thru the merchant of venice, my breathing shuts down. I didn't have a clue that, for authenticity, the cushions on the seats were stuffed with horsehair! So you see the trouble is, the presence of the relevant allergen isn't always obvious!

I, like one of the others, suffer from allergic reactions in the strangest places and at the strangest times. I am also allergic to horses, which I have heard is very rare.
If you were in a crowded place there could be hundreds of things you came in contact with. It could even be someone's perfume or cologne.
The best thing I ever did for myself is have the allergy test done. I would suggest having it done, it changed my life. The worst thing in the world is feeling like you can't breathe! Good luck!

It sounds like you breathed in something you were allergic to.. But something not common enough for you have had the reaction to before. I say this because about 8-10 years ago I had the same exact thing, I was ice skating in a rink (no smoke or fumes present) .. For me I felt sick to my stomach and then my throat starting swelling up and my eyes got puffy.. I had the coughing too. I had to call someone to come get me and I went home and loaded up on allergy meds and it eventually passed. I then had it happen again a few months later in a different place, but then I have never had it since. It was never determined what it was though. Even allergy tests never figured it out (although they are still a good thing if you have other allergies).
