I like to post a more positive message here.

I too have what the doctor and mri says are 2 herniated and degenerated discs (l4,l5). First attack was about 6 weeks ago. I am satisfied with my progress todate and the only lingering problem is occasional buttock pain after prolonged standing or walking. But it will go away after a few minutes of rest.

I will like to post here what works for me and accepted also by the american audience.

Mckenzie exercises (backwards bending and no forward bending) is top of the list. I read somewhere that this backward pumping can even dislodge bone fragments and keep the bulge in check. Mckenzie exercise are also centralizing and this is good.

Gentle streching exercises to work the tendons and ligaments around lower body and legs. This is absolutely necessary.

Heat pad (after inflammation has gone) to reduce pain and encourage blood circulation.

Abdominal strengthening exercises but making sure no forward bending.

I do have other modalities but since they sound odd to american audiences, I will not mention them.

I change to sleeping on the floor with a thin mattress.

Extremely careful with postures.

The reason I post this is to encourage others to do more for themselves and it doesn't depend on others. I think a positive attitude also helps.

My doctor has been less than useless. All he told me was that degeneration cannot be reversed and that once bulged cannot revert.

Movements and gentle streching once the pain is tolerable is extremely important. Ignore this and there is no healing.

Inflamation is part of the body's healing process and not to be feared as long as it is not prolonged. One night about 2 weeks after the attack, I was woken up by a sudden inflammation (pain). I instantly recognised it as a healing reaction and was happy. I was sure I did not do any thing wrong that day. Sure enough, my healing accelerated after that night.

I hope this posting encourages and gives hope to others. Do the right things and the body will take care of itself. Man in its infinite wisdom invents a lot of machines and gives a lot of technical names but finally it is the body that has to heal itself.

the Vast Majority...
Of episodic pain from the back will indeed resolve spontaneously with or without intervention. The measures listed above may have not helped accelerate the "healing" at all, but they are designed to reduce pain during this process. Disc degeneration will not rapidly heal spontaneously....The issues are ingrowth of nerves into the disc and the tearing of the collagen structures of the annulus fibrosis. In a minority of cases, there is sufficient injury that no amount of adjunctive measures will help with the pain.
What the above poster states is wise, sage advice. Do not run to the doctor for every ache and pain from the back, use gradual mobilization, engage in pain relief therapies during the time of healing.

Dear Dr. Algos
Dear Dr. Algos, from your post do you imply I will have reached the same result whatever I did or didn't do for myself? That each one of us are just helpless victims of statistics? And that only intervention by doctors count?

You are good in your allopathic medicine. I respect that. But I do notice (from other postings) your tendency to mock other theraphies and even things we can do to help ourselves.

One more thing, even if avoidance of acidic food/drinks does not help heal herniated disc directly, such avoidance do no harm to the body. I mean isn't it healthy to avoid refined sugar and coca cola, two of the most harmful things we consume. A healthier body will aid in the healing process too.

Not At All
I am stating you often do not need doctors as a treatment for many maladies. Herniated discs often heal with or without doctors interventions.
Because we do not live in the dark ages and because we are in general an educated population, there exists a responsibility from those who claim to have "cures" or treatments to demonstrate such using valid models. A non-valid model is "because I have treated some people with a treatment and it works, then I recommend it to others". This is not valid because there is bias, lack of placebo control, and does not meet the standards for validation required by the government and by science.
If I am critical of other therapies, it is not because of the therapies themselves, but because of the laziness of those purporting such therapies without doing the necessary requisite documentation of both efficacy and safety. You as patients deserve better than snake oil and voodoo. We passed that point long ago in our country. Increasingly the federal government is beginning to question the "alternative medicine" industry, finding increasing numbers of injuries and deaths associated with this completely unregulated unproven area.
As for acidic foods, all I ask is for proof. Give me some rationale behind bizarre statements and if there is proof, I will gladly evaluate and even accept it if it is true.
