Q: Fruit Smoothies

I like to have fruit smoothies, with several kinds of fruit, sometimes peanut butter, soy milk, and protein powder, after I work out at the gym, and sometimes when I am not doing the gym. I was wondering if the fruit, with all the sugar, makes this smoothie more fattening than it does nutritious.

The fruit is the least of your worries.Peanut butter is very high in fat as well as some soy milks. These are not animal fats, but if you are worried about your caloric intake, smoothies can be very high in calories.Look at your jar of peanut butter and your soy milk carton and the protein powder. Are you measuring the servings or do you just dump stuff in?How much of each ingredient is important.A lot of people fail to include drinkable calories into their daily intake, which can be a lot of missed calories!I was shocked when I read the nutrtional info for a jamba juice smoothie!600 calories for a 16 oz serving!I freeze some fruit, whatever I have and blend that with either lowfat soy or skim milk(8 oz plus 3-4 oz frozen fruit). This makes a good smoothie and much lower in fat and cals than commercial stuff. If I have one of these, that is my meal, not in addition to a meal.Hope this was helpful.Patty

Thanks Patty
Thanks patty for your response to my smoothie question....I do like soy milk a lot, but you're right, a switch to skim milk would reduce my calories....I was mainly concerned with the sugar content of all the fruit, wondering if just the fruit on a regular basis would be too much.

If you avoid white sugar, fruit should be just fine.Just pay attention to serving size.Fresh fruit is better than prepackaged, processed(usually has high fructose corn syrup).I like to freeze fresh fruit and use that instead of ice in a smoothie.I also use soy milk, but use the lowfat type instead of regular, but am not opposed to using skim milk.

a Smoothy Is a Great Way to Take Supplements Too
Just add your supplements to your smoothy. No intent to be similar to orange juice ad on tv Laughing I add a liquid nutrition supplement with 178 ingredients in each ounce to our smoothies. Adds the antioxidant equivalent of 6 fresh fruits to your smoothie (according to independent lab orac test results). Post exercise, antioxidants are important as exercise creates large quantities of free radicals.

Everything except my fruit is either fat free or less sugar. What am I doing wrong. I eat a good breakfast and drink my smoothie for lunch and maybe a dinner or not if I am hungry. I need help

the key to healthy diets is small meals. A breakfast, later one a snack (i like fruit or veggies), lunch, another snack, and a small dinner. look up 'negative calorie' foods and youll find quite a few delicious fruits and vegatiables as negative calories! I usually choose these as my snacks. It sounds like your making very healthy smoothies so your nutrition is probably great!
But, the key to real weight loss (balanced with a great diet) is excercise. Try to get cardio every day and you will most likely see results.
