Hi,

i am 25 years old and have just been diagnosed with fibrocystic changes in my right breast. My mother died of breast cancer when she was 36 years old, her cancer started when she was just 26.

Should I be worried that those fibrocystic changes are the preliminaries of breast cancer?

Does the fact my mom got cancer so young mean her cancer was genetic, and therefore that she might have transmitted those genes to me?

I am very worried and would appreciate some answers,

thank you

christine

Hi

fibrocystic changes do not predispose to cancer. You can be assured of that.

On the other hand, some forms of breast cancer clearly have a familial transmission. You should definitely be screened earlier and more often than average-risk people. Guidelines recomend to start screening 10 years before the presentation of your family member, which means: start at 26 years for you.
