Q: extreme reactions to medication

I have a serious problem that is destroying my life, but nobody seems to have an explanation, or they don?t believe me. A few years ago, I began to notice consistently that any time I would have a prescription drug or an herb especially, I would have a major reaction to it. It's as if I took fifty times the normal dose. This is especially true with herbs. If I only have a few milligrams of let's say ginseng, within 15 seconds the substance has been completely activated in my system and I am bouncing off walls basically and I can't sleep for 3 days straight. I have, over the years, been prescribed 20 different medications and each one seems to give me hell. I can't seem to emphasize each doctor visit to different doctors that I just can't take a drug, that my body can't handle it.

As a side note: every day of my life, I wake up with a ("bi-temporal chronic") headache. It is located on the two "soft-spots" on the sides of my head (not in the center). It is never extreme pain, but it is very uncomfortable and it never goes away. When I was younger I used to drink tons of cokes per day, and I wonder if the long term effects to what would be a continuous extreme overdose of caffeine for me maybe have caused it? Or could it be a preservative in foods that I am having side effects from?

Basically, my life sucks. Like, when I accidentally drank a drink with herbal contents, I was ready to kill myself because of the horrible side effects. I can?t live my life fearing that I will accidentally drink a juice or tea with herbs in it, and I can?t keep fearing that I will go into the emergency room and doctors will give me a typical dose of a drug which would be fatal to me and normal for anyone else.

Please reply back even if you don't think you can be of too much help.

A couple of suggestions - learn to check labels (lowcarbfriends.Com might be a starting point as my daughter found it useful in learning about such things re her ibs) also re your headache which I think may be stress related due to worrying about this rather than due to anything else - although it may be caused by preservatives & again checking labels etc could help here .

Re stress you could try: yoga, relaxation, meditation, ces or sound/light machines (check dynamind.Com - you can rent them too to see if they help - the ces machine has done wonders for my stress & headaches) - also natural supplements like valerian, dhea, 5htp, sam-e, vitaminb, st johns wort to name a few.

first of all, I want profound medical explanation, not for the headache, but for my body's sensitivity to drugs and herbs. Could a part of my liver not be functioning the way it should to metabolize the drugs/herbs? Do I have an enzyme deficiency? By the way, think about it: a consistent headache 24 hours a day 7 days a week since before august of 2003??? I do not have any stress by the way. I am a very relaxed person. When it comes to drinking an herbal tea or taking a prescription drug, a person could not hold me down and shove it down my throat. And by the way, you recommended that I have herbs such as st. Johns wort??? What are you thinking? I just told you I cannot handle stuff like that. I have had st. John's wort it gave me a huge headache immediately and made me weird until it left my system.

I'm Human!@!@!@!@
Look my posts are done after midnight (australia is in a different time zone as well as hemisphere) so I am human & I make errors - & 1 error doesn't invalidate my entire post or my whole point.

You may in your godlike infallible wisdom "know" that you're not stressed but maybe you forgot to tell your body!!

As to wanting a profound medical explanation - go see some more doctors people here are just that people wwho share experiences & information if you choose not to listen then go elsewhere - try google or yahoo & search out your own answers. Also if you had bothered to check out the site I recommended you might have gotten some answers or ideas that would lead to answers but I guess that would not be profound enough for you.
