Q: Polycystic Ovaries?!?!

Almost 2 years ago I was diagnosed with polycystic ovaries and my doctor told me to take yasmin. I understand that I have eggs that are trapped in my ovaries because I was not releasing them, but my question is how is taking birth control supposed to help my condition if the pills stop ovulation?
Two other questions that i've got if anyone can answer...
1. When you are on the pill, do you ever release viable eggs? If so when?
2. Also, does anyone know the probability of me being able to release healthy eggs in the future?
If anyone has any answers i'd like to hear them! :d

Hi there pokie:

i have some information for you, and hopefully it's at least somewhere to start. Polycystic ovaries (often called pcos or pcod) is a relatively newly discovered condition. That being said many doctors are unsure of what is the best treatment/therapy for it. Now your ovaries aren't neccessarily the reason that it has happened, and most studies point to it being an endocrine related disease more than the ovaries themselves (these days studies appear to suggest that whatever the trouble is with the ovaries are more a symptom than the cause, but with new things like this it's tough to really say). Seeing an endocrinologist is a good start for the "bigger picture" treatment of it. Most often women with pcos get put on the pill for the sole purpose of masking the pcos symptoms (such as giving a regulated period). There seems to be a good lot of debate whether being onthe pill makes pcos better, worse or is neutral.

Women with pcos have varied experiences with being able to release healthy eggs and therefore get pregnant. Some women have to see fertility experts, while some women don't need help conceiving at all, it's sort of a mixed bag.

There is a pretty good site you can look at to help: http://www.Pcosupport.Org/ many women I know with pcos like this site alot.

Good luck, I hope that answered your questions.

Just to let you know, the birth control pills work great for regulating my oh so messed up period, but I have no idea if the pills are helping my ovaries to stop looking like "chocolate chip cookies", or so my doc calls it. I didn't have another x-ray this past year to see if it had gotten better or worse... Although I wish I did Sad anyway, thanks for the info Smile

Hey all!!

I was diagnosed with pcos a while back (about 7 years) and have been on birth control for 6 1/2 years. The birth control was to regulate my periods but now is to prevent pregnancy, which is my choice.

The last ultrasound I had a couple years ago showed no signs of having pcos. I'm guessing the pill has/had something to do with this.
