Q: What Drugs Can Affect Ana?

When reading the 11 things that are used to diagnose lupus I saw a line that said "a positive ana in the absence of drugs causing it". Can someone tell me what drugs or types of drugs can cause or elevate the ana?

My ana went from 1:80 to 1:684 this year. I've finally been diagnosed with sle as well as tumid lupus due to meeting at least 6 of the criteria. However, i'm curious about the ana. Does anyone know the answer to this?
Thanks!
Jt

I think that the following drugs *can* cause a false postive ana and also cause drug-induced lupus: hydralazine, isoniazid, procainamide, and several anticonvulsants.

Other Drugs
Hi there! I recently had a blood test that revealed elevated ana levels, and the allergist I was seeing told me that this can be related to sulfa drugs. I don't know what all this includes, but the one I was using was bactrim, an antibiotic. I stopped taking the bactrim immediately, but 6 weeks later I still have elevated ana levels, so i'm off to see the rheumatologist tomorrow. I will go to the vatican to see the pope if he can tell me why i'm covered in severely itchy hives!

Thanks everyone for the info. I'm not using any of those drugs. Only thyroid medicine and some antibiotics for bladder called cipro. Only other thing is protonix for the tummy. So, I guess the ana is truly elevated.
Thanks for your help,
jt

Sadly, the pope is off tending to more important issues. Laughing I did go to the rheumy a couple days ago, and he ordered a whole bunch of tests, so hopefully i'll have a few answers before long, without a trip to italy. In the meantime, i'm stuck looking like a kid fresh home from summer camp, covered in calamine lotion to help quell the itching. Paired with hands that now resemble paws due to swelling and no discernable sign of knuckles where there used to be, i'm a sight to behold!! Laughing

Ana Levels
On a more serious note, my ana levels jumped from 1:340 to 1:1280 in under 6 weeks. This seems like a massive jump to me, but I don't know what would be considered very high. I hope that you can find the help that you are looking for- I know this has been a very trying process so far, and I have yet to be diagnosed with anything. Good luck!
