Q: Tatoos On Lupus Patients?

I have systemic lupus. In full remission on drugs. Doing fantastic and would like a tatoo. Does anyone know if this can cause a flare or not? My Dr. And I argue all the time...He just doesn't like them I think! If I took antibiotics before during and after (say 10 days total) what do ya think?!
Anyone else had one? What happened? Lol Laughing

Tattoo You
Glad you opened the door on that one.

I am interested in getting a belly-button piercing (it was a bet, and please don't laugh, lady brannon)...And have no idea the the repercussions may be.

As for tattooing, here in sc they just passed a law making it legal (that is to say...It hasn't stopped anyone before by being illegal)...And they're ironing out the kinks as far as health concerns go.

I would say your doctor may be cautioning you because of the health risks. I would be cautioned too, which is why I haven't gotten my belly button pierced yet (and the bet was two weeks ago).

Anyone else with thoughts?

I'm not laughing. I just got a second ear piercing and plan on getting a tattoo in the near future! Smile

as for the ramifications, there are a lot of things to consider. I'd talk to my doctor. Smile but since you are having issues with yours, i'm not sure what to say! I'd hate for you to get an infection or something and cause a flare!

Maybe get a second opinion? Is this a gp or rheumy saying it isn't a good idea? Just wondering...

Hugs,

I think if you want the tatoo, then you should get it. I have five tatoos and body jewlery and have never had a flare up between it all. I don't think the lupus will affect that; you should be worried about who's doing your tatoo and the safety risks that go along with it

I agree with gocity86! I got a large tattoo on my left rib cage last year and it didn't cause me any trouble. I wouldn't do anything to my body during a blare though, but would you really want to? I can not imagine getting another tat right now, as horrible as I feel! Getting a tat is painful and you have to sit or lay perfectly still for a long time, mine was 2.5 hours straight and there is NO way I could do that right now. I would be very cautious about who does it, do you research. And a bit of personal advice...get something custom done. Mine is a custom piece, very personal and it helps me through some really tough Lupus times. Smile And as always, as your doctor and if you don't like what he/she says, ask another one! Smile I have learned that to be true with any medical matter.

I have 5 tats and just don't feel that they cause any ill affects on the condition, I just had surgery and thankfully did not have flare.

tattoo & belly ring
I have had Lupus for 16 years...I have had my belly ring for 15...only one time did I have a problem about 5 years ago when I had a bad flare...it made my bellybutton red and puffy...once the flare was over everything went back to normal. As far as the tattoo, i'm getting one next week...my motto...live your life to the fullest, do what you want when you can!! Best of luck to you!!!

I have Lupus and not only do I have a belly button ring, I am also sporting 4 tattoos. I was super careful with the wound care, because of the way Lupus just loves to give me infections lol, but it went ok for me. I think you would be fine.

hi
I have SLE lupus which is currently being treated with antimalarials & I am in the process of having a full sleeve tattoo completed,in fact I only had a 2 hour session just 3 weeks ago & my lupus was fine,I already have 7 other tattoos & every time I have work done the lupus has never been a problem,I have never taken antibiotics before or after either,as long as you go to a reputable studio to get the work done & take care of it properly afterwards while it is healing there should'nt be any problems.
