Q: Odd Smells And Tastes After Coughing

For about a year and a half or so, I have been having a problem. When I wake up, everything smells and tastes normal. Almost everyday, however, out of the blue, I may cough, laugh speak loudly, inhale strongly, or sneeze, etc. And then everything smells very strange. It is almost as if my sense of smell is stronger but distorted.

Also, my sense of taste becomes strange in that it too seems stronger but very much distorted. When this happens, it seems as if I always have a weird taste in my mouth. Beer tastes almost soapy and this change in taste can bother my stomach. Spicy foods seems spicyer and with a strange aftertaste. In fact, all foods have an aftertaste. Though I rarely smoke, if I smell smoke after this condition comes out, it smells very odd- kind of like a burnt chocolate smell.

The strange thing is this may not happen one day or the next, but then it will every day for weeks. I never know when it will happen and I always make it a point not to sneeze or cough or clear my throat if I can help it. I've tried to find a pattern of when it occurs but can happen at anytime, in any environment. And when it does happen, i'm stuck with it all day until I go to sleep. When I wake up the next da, everything is back to normal again until I cough of sneeze or whatever. Sometimes I can cough really hard or sneeze a ton of times, or laugh out loud for minutes without anything happening and then a simple inhale or throat clearing will bring on this strange condition.

Hope i'm not boring you. I have not gone to the doctor yet, but just wanted to know if anybody had any idea what this could be.

Potbelly, Do You Have Gerd (acid Reflux) Problems?
I ask because I developed GERD in the middle of this year, and since then, I have had almost the exact same problems as you. A tentative explanation for the taste and smell effects would be that the taste of reflux in the mouth causes taste, aftertaste, and smell changes. Remember that the senses of taste and smell are deeply connected to each other. Coughing and sneezing would make the problem worse because these actions can provoke more reflux.

Best wishes,
