Depression is usually viewed as a physical disorder involving an imbalance of chemicals in the brain. If this is true then talk therapy may not be as useful as is believed, because we cannot expect to cure a physical disease with psychotherapy. This leaves drug therapy as an alternative.
There may an alternative to drug therapy.
It has been well documented that depression may be caused by insulin resistance (hypoglycemia). This means that the body is not responding properly to insulin pushing glucose across cell membranes, including brain cells. When this happens the body reacts by producing more insulin into the system. This results in a sudden fall in blood sugar levels and the brain interprets this as brain starvation. In response the brain (the hypothalamus to be precise) sends a hormonal message to the adrenal glands to pour adrenaline into the blood stream. This hormone functions to raise blood sugar levels again in a split second, but this stress hormone is also a flight/fight hormone, causing unexplainable attacks of anxiety.
Thus the anxiety attacks appear to be caused by abnormal secretions of adrenaline in response to abnormal blood sugar levels.
Fortunately, this can be treated without recourse to drugs by going on a hypoglycemic diet, which is similar to the diabetic diet. The hypoglycemic diet is a high protein, low (refined) carbohydrate diet, consumed in frequent small snack, plus vitamins and minerals. It releases glucose slowly from proteins, rather than from refined carbohydrates, avoiding the wild peaks and falls of glucose concentrations in the blood. It therefore does not trigger excess amount of adrenaline.
Thus treatment of anxiety attacks is within the reach of anybody who adopts the hypoglycemic diet.
