According to dsm-iv "continuous signs of
the disturbance persist for at least 6
months. "
1. What if after the psychotic episode
you are on medication and therefore you
have not symptoms for 6 months? Are you a
schizophrenic?
2. Is it true that the paranoid
schizophrenia shows its symptoms only when
there is a psychotic episode?

to Dsm-iv Or Not to Dsm-iv? Posted: 07-22-04 07:00am
That is the question!!
Truly we are all unique & whatever is
written in a book is general not specific
to each & every individual!!
You do of course raise an interesting
& valid point - sometimes the only
real way to ascertain whether we have a
problem - & whether a medication is
actually having a positive impact on our
health (be it mental or physical) is to go
off the med - but this should only be done
after much research, thought, discussion
& with much care - including not being
alone when you do it!!
My mother-in-law is a paranoid
schizophrenic & I assure you she does
not have to behaving an episode to show
symptoms - & she may or may not be on
meds at the time - mind you I also believe
that she uses her illness to get her own
way etc. But whether that is always what
she's doing or whether she's at least some
of the time actually mentally unwell - I
doubt that even she knows anymore.

Or american medical association sets
standards for the doctors to follow ! One
thing they have done alot of research on
is that of schizophrenia ! So, they say,
we should " hold back " from making the
diagnosis of schizophrenia until the
doctor has seen the patient for at least
six months ( six months of freqent visits
I might add ) ! So, take care, and work
with your doctor instead of listening to a
bunch of baboons on the internet ! Bye

Your Bigotry Is Showing Laura Posted: 07-25-04 00:43am
You can be a ***** & you can call me
names but people come here for help &
advice not to hear opinions based purely
on your need to put others (currently me)
down.
Surprising though this may be to people
with a narrow outlook other countries also
have associations which set standards for
drs to follow - that does not
mean that a) drs will follow them
or b) that these standards are always
godlike in their accuracy.
you could have frequent visits with a dr
for as long as you like but the reality is
that many drs at times make their
diagnosis on sight based on largely
non-medical criteria. So as the person
most concerned you should research your
diagnosis & question your dr as much
as you can because it is your life that is
being "played" with not the drs!! Would
you let a mechanic work on your car every
week for 6 moinths without any questions??
Isn't your body/life worth more than a
car!!

"much research, thought, discussion &
with much care".But in my view it is so
simple - a psychotic episode lasting
longer than a month is a sure sign for
schizophrenia. Don't you agree? (of
course after excluding the possibilities
of bipolar disorder and drugs which
doesn't take so much time).

Take the Time ... Posted: 07-29-04 15:27pm
That it requires or are you so far above
the american medical association that you
no longer require their assistance ? Six
months at least six months of frequent
visits is what they ask before diagnosing
someone with schizophrenia . You may
have tip - toed onto one of my letters
about my son jeff . I thought I was
protecting him by keeping him out of the
state hospitals when actually that is
where he needed to be the entire time .
Why you might possibly ask me . Jeff was
seen by a team of experts who are used to
dealing with the more serious cases .
After 15 suicide attempts I finally did
what jeff 's psychiatrist had been asking
me to do for months . I " let it go " !
If I hadn 't done that when I did jeff may
not be with me right now . Laura

Let's assume that there are no symptoms in
these 6 months. Really this time is
perhaps necessary to research the past of
the patient or the so called premorbid
functioning. But what could be the diagnose
afterwards if not schizophrenia? Just
there is no another option.

There are always other options - whether
they apply to you or not is another
question - as is whether you can find them
or not. Sometimes we fail to realize that
something is a relevant symptom - & so
neither we nor our drs take it into
account in diagnosing or treating.
Research, research, research is needed by
you in order to understand & obtain
the right & best treatment after first
ensuring that the diagnosis is accurate of
course.
