Q: Dry Socket

Hi, I just recently got 3 wisdom teeth taken out. The two on the right side of the my mouth is healing fine but my left side is giving me problems. The hole is quite big, at least 50% bigger than the ones on my left. And during my jello and pudding diet, I became delirious and I went on an eating spree. Very bad idea. Food got caught in the hole and I had to manually take it out. Now i'm afraid I have a dry socket. I can't see far into the hole but I can taste something disgusting. It makes my breath smell horrid. There's a slight pain but it's not enough to disrupt my daily life. Do I even have dry socket? And if I do, do I have to go to the dentist again? And is taking amoxicillin optional?
Thanks for your help.

Sounds like you have an infection in that extraction site. I hate to say it, but the bad taste you have in your mouth is probably pus. The smae things happend to me when I had mine out. Go back to the dentist ot oral surgeon (whoever took them out) as soon as possible!! You need to get that taken care of. The dentist will prescribe something for you - depending on your health history- to take. Most offices give you a water syringe to clean out the extraction site with. Just try to keep it really clean and call the dentist asap!!! Infections are nasty!! Good luck

Infection??? I really don't have access to an oral surgeon at the moment because i'm at college taking summer courses. Is there any other way to ameliorate the pus at least? And if the infection isn't taken care of immediately what will happen to it? The earliest I can go to an oral surgeon is in a week or two. Is that ample time or will it worsen by then? I'm terrified that if I wait my whole lower jaw will fall off Sad ... Is amoxicillin enough to kill the infection? I'm very nervous. Thanks for all your help.

Infections aren't something that usually go away on their own. It would be in your best interest to see a doctor. Doesn't your school have a clinic you can go to? The amoxicillin would probably be ok to take but I think you should get a professional opinion before you start self medicating. And even if you can't get in to see your oral surgeon for two weeks - you should call and describe your symptoms so that they are made aware and they will probably be able to help you - either by having you come in or calling in a prescription for you. I really think it would be in your best interest to seek professional advise. Oh and in answer to your question about what happens if you just let it go, it will likely spread and make you sick and possibly cause damage to your mouth.

About the amoxicillin, it was first prescribed but accidently left the medication at home. The doctor said it would help me against infections. I guess he was right Laughing. Calling my doctor would be the next best thing besides a visit. Only option I have left. My friend said if I left it, it would go away by itself. I'll see what my doctor says. Hope I live... :d

i've given in. I'm taking no chances. I'm going home this weekend and getting this problem solved. Better safe and sorry. Thanks for all your help floridagirl and toothclnr81. Without your help I would've probably just waited it out. Now I know better.

Dry Socket
Wait until the weekend? If you truly have dry socket-you'd be out of your mind with pain by the weekend.Call your dentist,i'm sure he/she can phone in a prescription to a local pharmacy. You'll feel much better once you get on some meds.I would still see my dentist on the weekend, sometimes a medicated dressing is placed into the socket- this usually gives fast relief, but will need to be changed a few times.Best of luck to you-don't wait!Pattyv

Thanks for the advice patty. I've already bought the tickets and i'm getting ready to leave. Hmmm, does dry socket really hurt that much? I guess I don't have it since i'm not rolling in pain...Yet. I hope they give me medicated dressing even if it doesn't help much with healing. I rather have mental relief than physical relief.
