Q: Do You Have Symmastia W/your Breast Implants?

Hello - I saw the plastic surgery topic and just wanted to share what I have been dealing with for the past 4 years now.

Unfortunately, I am one of the rising many that developled symmastia after I was botched up with my breast aug. Surgery.

The condition is caused by the surgeon cutting the sternum. Resulting in either mild to severe symmastia. It looks like one breast. The sternum area is raised and you have no cleavage. Some unexperienced Dr.'s do this in the event in trying to create more cleavage in thinner patients.. Big mistake!

Definition: symmastia describes the phenomenon where the breast implants cross the breast bone to touch each other over the midline of the chest where the cleavage area would normally be seen. Attempts to "increase cleavage" by releasing the soft tissues or inner origins of the pectoralis muscles lead to symmastia by surgically disrupting the normal anatomical attachments of skin and muscle at the medial aspects of the breasts where the cleavage is normally defined.

It can be repaired. Only through a skilled surgeon that has done these repairs before.

My condition is not that severe but this experience has been a nightmare. I just feel into the wrong hands. Sadly.

I will get this correction done one day.. I hope within this year. It is about $ 4 k or some Dr.'s charge even more for the repair. So, I have been saving on and off. With life's interuptions.. I needed a new car last year so that delayed me. I have gotton depressed over this in the past but I am content now and realize I will one day get fixed....

Thanks for letting me vent and share my drama with you all...
If anyone else here has the same thing or know someone that has this,
please email me... Thank you....

two days post operation
I do not have the indentation or cleavage that I should have between the breasts. This was my fourth operation. This operation the Dr. was correcting scar tissue in my breast. Apparently, he may have cut too much and now I have a uni-boob. After reading about it on the site. I believe I have the the same issue. I bought the thong bra which should arrive today. Scared and wishing I had not gone forward with the procedure. If you have any other suggestions or know of a qualified Dr. please let me know.

i have had 3 ops,on the nhs.
first 1 the implants rippled,& had lumps in so they removed them,
2nd time i went 1 size bigger, but they where also wrong,
the 3rd time,i complained,as i have a lump that hurts in the clevage,to be only told that they had put the implants to close together..hence why i have the lump..that they have applied to my doctors for funding,& so far have not got it,what is so wrong here,as its there fault they have messed this up,& just dont understand the logic,of why people should be charged for the surgeons mess up,or that in my case i may never get another op,as they may not get the funding for it,when in reality if they mess your op up,you should automatically be given a new date asap,& be free of charge if you paid for it,or if on hns, automatacially, given a date,at the mo,im seriosly considering conculting a soliciter, whether i will get anywhere i dont no...

Correcting synmastia
This is a very difficult condition to correct. As stated above, it's because the surgeon tried to release the skin too close to the middle in an attempt to create cleavage. HOWEVER, some women have breasts that are naturally very close together (just like some who have them far apart) and then putting an implant will only accentuate a pre-existing situation. To repair this is very difficult. The simplest and most effective way is to have the implants removed, the skin between the breasts resutured down to the chest wall and allowed to heal. Once healed (give it at least 3 months) new implants can be put in and now the skin between the implants is more adherent to the chest bone and doesn't get lifted up.

I too am dealing with the same thing, I knew the first week after surgery something was wrong. I had a 2nd opinion done after repeadly seeing my doctor and him telling me to relax and give them time to relax. I am now 8 months into it and so depressed. I went back and saw the surgeon after my 2nd consult and I was shocked at the way he reacted. I was told in 25 years he has neer had a patient with it and gave m my options of course at my charge and said I would never be happy with any result. He then procedded to tell me maybe I should see a therapist and maybe I should try anti depressants t deal with the stress/depression of it all. I do not feel this is my issue, I have beeen telling him over and over and now I am scared sad angry depressed. I am a singe mom, waited 10 years to do this and exhausted all my resources.....
