Buying a Car
Posted: 07-13-04 10:18am

Okay, I have a problem. I should have gotten my license when I was 16 ,but I procrastinated and never got to it. And jon said that he wouldn't buy me a car until I got it, so I will be getting it next month. So we went car shopping yesterday. I found a great 2001 explorer. I was black, kenwood cd player, nice upgraded sound, a touch screen panel, and two headrest moniters with a dvd player. So it was nice. Anyway jon asked me if I wanted it and I was like I don't know. I mean I am having a baby ,and since I am not ready to be a minivan mom an suv is the next best thing. And not only that it was really nice, but it is $10,000. And jon is buying it for me so it is not like the money is coming out of my pocket. But i've been looking on ebay and yesterday someone won a jeep grand cherokee for $1,800. So i'd rather spend $2,000 on a car and use the other $8,000 towards the baby. But the only thing is that with ebay you really don't know what you are getting from the out of town dealers. So should I take the explorer or go ebay shopping?

I think you should go for the explorer. That is really really cheap. I went car shopping for a minivan and there is nothing out here for 10,000, its all 13,000 and over. And I have to make big payments. So now I have to wait for my taxes next year to have a good down payment. But make sure you really like this car and you are able to handle a big suv. Because I know those are kinda big. And your just getting your licence. But in the mean time, maybe keep car shopping and explore all your options. Make sure the milage is low. Whatever year it is, should only have about 10,000 miles a year. So if its a 2001 it should have no more than...40,000 to 45,000. And it should no way have more than 70,000 because then they wasted all the miles and will soon brake down on you in like 2-3 years and will need alot of maintenance. Make sure it runs good, take it for a test drive and test out other cars too.
Good luck on getting the car you want!

Plus with ebay, imagine how many miles are going to be put on that car getting it to you.. I think you should get it.

Neither. The explorer scares me. It seems like they are not asking enough, which makes me think there is something wrong with it. I'd definitely take anything I was considering to some place like firestone where I could pay them $20-$40 to look it over and tell me anything that's wrong with it.

I'd look on autotrader. Cars on ebay typically go for market value anyway. You aren't going to get a great deal unless you are super lucky, and the chances of that are slim. And you definitely aren't going to get anything near where you are. With autotrader, you have more cars to look at, all near you, and more time to think about them because it isn't an auction that is timed.

From an insurance perspective, i'll tell you this: for $10,000 you can get a 2004 suzuki forenza. They have really cheap insurance and 10 year warranties, so there is no fear of buying a lemon. Plus you get a brand new car instead of a used one. Another good one is hyundai accent. They are cheap with good warranties too. Now neither of them is an suv, but you will pay more for an suv plus extra for insurance. I'd get the forenza. I think they look great, and they are a good buy.

Hey linux

you know alot about this stuff. What if I were to get a second car how much do you think my insurance would go up? I have a 92 honda accord right now and I pay...85 a month in insurance and I want to buy a minivan from either '98-'01 like a dodge or ford or something. Im not sure yet. But im gonna make payments on it, and I dont want my insurance payments too high because I will have a baby at that time.

They will probably double or not quite double. You're probably looking at something like $150-$175 a month. You should always call your insurance company before buying a car and get a quote on what the new car would cost you in insurance.

First, it does sound kind of cheap but you've got to think about where I live. And we had it look over yesterday by my uncle al, he said the only thing that he found was that it has been repaired. The back door (trunk) and the bumper had dents, and have been painted. Which they told us anyway, plus i'm not buying it from a private owner it's a dealer. Ohh yay and it has $53,000 miles.

And i've tried auto trader too ,but the only cars that I can find close to me are outraguos for the year. And the rest are far so it would just be buying on ebay, and the prices are higher. On ebay I only look at auctions that are n"o reserve" meaning if it starts at $100 ,and only gets up to $200 at the end, the person that bid $200 is the winner.

And I would buy a car if the deal is right, but I don't want a brand new car b/c no matter what I am paying cash for the car, but down her wih my insurance company (soon to be) all new car have to have comprehensive coverage. And for me that would be $610 a month for a mid-sized dark colored car,and I am not about to pay more for insurance than I will for rent.

Ohh how old r u nikki? I am asking b/c of how much you pay for insurance. Mine will be $250 for liabilty , for any mid-sized car or normal sized suv that is not red, yellow or white.

I am an insurance agent. The only reason they say all new cars have to have full coverage (comprehensive and collision) is because they are assuming you will finance the car. If you got a brand new car under $10k and paid cash for it, you don't have to get full coverage. Its a good idea to protect your investment, but they cannot under any circumstances force you to carry full coverage if you don't finance the car. If they try, fight. If they resist, find another insurance company. What company are you with? What is your city state and zip code? I'll do some research for you.

Another thing- its not a good thing that you are buying a used car from a dealership, its a bad thing. What I mean by that is that dealerships do a great job at covering up things that are wrong with the car so you don't know its messed up. Then the car breaks later, but you bought it as is, so the dealership doesn't have to fix it. If you had bought it from an individual, you would have known all the things that were broken and maybe paid less or maybe not bought the car at all, but at least you would be prepared for repairs that might come along. I bought my car from a dealership used and in one year I have had to replace the egr valve, breaks, transmission, and repaint it, about $4000 of repairs in all. I'm recommending that you buy from an individual and take the car to get checked out by a mechanic before you buy!

Nikki the color thing is b/c of accident stats. Like the last time I checked red cars were in the most accidents, and the safest color care is supposed to be silver (or dark colored). The delearship has warrenties available but I don't have all of that info. The two companies that gave me the lowest quotes were safe auto (liability) ,and progressive (both). And my uncle has checked it out. In his opinion it is fine mechanically, the inside is in mint condition, and the only thing that he found was the repairs made to the bumper and the the truck door.

Wow...Does he have money or what? Just awhile ago you said that he gave you 2 grand for the baby, I thought that was great! Now hes going to buy you a vehicle! Must be nice!!!!!!!!!!! I just went and applied to get a car loan yesterday and just found out that it was approved. But im going to be paying out of my @$$ for it too..Its a 1998 sunfire gt (dark green)...And it was 8800 (after taxes). So all in all im going to have to pay about $220/month on this.. But I want to pay it off as fast as I can because I want to move in the new year and I don't want a big car payment following me!!! The other thing...I only have a part time job!! Ahhh...Stress! So im frantically looking around for another job or a full time one! Wish me luck on that, hah

I really don't want a car note. B/c I am so young, and with a new baby, I have to budget most of the money around the baby. And yeah he has alot of money. He doen't have a job and never has,but he has an enourmous trust fund, so he really has no money worries, but he can't always take out money when he want to. Plus he is really giving to me atleast, I guess that is just how our relationship is. I would give him my last and I know he would do the same. But I really hope you can find a full time job, I hope I can find one too ,so I won't be stuck in the house all day until I go to class. Ohh how much of a down payment will you put down?

But I don't know if I can back out of it now Confused
