Q: a Brace... Does This Exist?

Hi everyone,

okay, this is a tough one... But hopefully you can advise if such a brace exists.

My father is living with us and has alzheimers and has suffered from numerous strokes. As a result of this, he has hemiparesis and as such, his left hand is always closed and is never used. He has been like this for the past two years.

The problem that I have is that because the hand is closed, the skin on the palm of his hand can not breath and you can not tell him what to do as he has alzheimers and does not obey any commands. He is also bed ridden. I wash his hand every second day and what I notice is that there are blisters between his fingers and in any crease in the palm of his hand.

What I am looking for is a brace that I can put his hand into that will allow him to open the hand slightly (not all the way as this is very painful) and spread his fingers so that this will allow the air to circulate within his palm area and hopefully get rid of the blisters. The skin is very soft and tender as this hand does not get used for anything. I have tried numerous methods, but the key here is to let air freely circulate around this area.

Can any experts out there advise if such a thing exists? There must be people out there who have the same problem?

Kind regards,
brendon

Hi brendon!

I admire your care for your father and hope that you will find something to help him.

In the mean time: I have been working with people with physical impairments and know of something that may help.

Afo's, as I knew them (not that I have the foggiest idea what the abbreviation means) were thin plastic moulds used to keep feet in proper form. I'm sure that if you find a clinic, a hand mould can be made.

Cheers!
