My husband suffers from sciatica, or a
bulging or herniated disc in his back that
is pressing on the sciatic nerve, the pain
radiates from the top of the buttocks,
down the back of his left leg, right down
to the bottom of his foot. He can barely
walk sometimes. He has had a nerve sleeve
root injection which just made the pain
flare up even worse, he then had an
epidural steroid injection to try and numb
the pain and that didn't work either. He
is now considering having a micro
discectomy, which is where the surgeon
cuts out a piece of the disc where it is
pressing on the nerve. Has anyone else
ever been in this situation ? What do you
use for pain control in the mean time ?
Regards,

Yes my husband had it too. We went
throught every thing and landed up haven
surgery, but before he did he was on
vicidon for the pain it seemed to help a
little becasue its a nerve it didn't take
all the pain away. His got do bad that he
could not even walk or drive a car at the
end. He went throught the surgery and
every thing is better he still gets pain
he will always but its much better. Don't
let them fool you to think that all the
pain will go away, but it will stop 90% of
it and he will do much better. See my
husban works in a factory that does not
help at all. Make sure that he relearns
to pick things up with his legs and not
his back. Number one thing that starts it
all is lifting with you back and not your
legs. I hope that this helps.

Thankyou so much for replying ramsassy, it
is so good to be able to get some
feedback. Yes my husband's injury was
originally caused by heavy lifting at
work, and he is now at the stage where
some days he can barely walk or drive the
car, to make it worse we have a manual
car. He has tried every medication the
doctor could possibly prescribe, the doc
even offered him narcotics at one stage,
but he decided against that, as he didn't
want the complications later of the
addiction side of it. We are waiting to
see a specialist who may be able to refer
him to get a micro discectomy, we have
heard it is much better than bone fusion.
Which operation did your husband have ?
If they could operate and take away even
50% of the pain, he would be very greatful
for that, so if an op will take away 90%,
i'm sure he would be in heaven. I think
after the pain and suffering he has been
going through the last 3 years, he will
probably be too scared to lift anything
ever again.
