I recently found out that I am pregnant. Before I found out I was a heavy chain smoker for 3 and 1/2 years. I found out 2 days ago that I am seven weeks pregnant and realized I had been smoking the whole time. Im curious if this will have any effects on my unborn child??!?!! And any tips you can give me to cope with being this young and pregnant would be helpful and appreciated. Shocked

Smoking While Pregnant
Please, please, please lil666, please give up the smoking thing, you are choking your baby. As long as you are smoking so is your baby, and his or her little body just can't handle it, it will destroy his growing little lungs. The baby is most likely to be ok at the moment, but when baby starts relying on your body more and more, he will end up being born with lung and breathing problems, possibly asthma. Smoking during pregnancy also stunts their growth apparently, so baby will be born underweight. I know a woman who smoked all through both of her pregnancies, and both her kids are very small for their age, and you can actually hear them breathing, there is a kind of wheezing sound with their normal breathing. The sooner you give up smoking the better off baby will be, don't worry about the nicotine in your blood stream, worry about the smoke in your lungs, your baby is in there trying to get a breath, and all he will be recieiving is a lung full of smoke.

Good luck lil'

17 And Pregnant
You said you are 17 and not sure how you will cope, what situation are you in lil' ? Are you with the father ? Do you have your parents or any relatives close by ? Are you working or studying ? Do you have a permanent home to live in ? All these things are going to make life a hell of a lot easier on you while having a baby at 17. I was 16 when I had my first child, and my parents made a big difference for me, I felt a little security in knowing that if I don't know what to do, mum will. Working is hard if you don't have a partner, garndmothers can't always be there to babysit, and you can't live without good old "cash". Lots of things to think about, but we are all here to help you whenever you need it, keep in touch.

Suzy is right
smoking

* smoking can stop blood flowing from a mother to her unborn baby.
* the baby can't get food or get rid of waste.
* a smoking women may not put on weight while pregnant, and this hurts the baby trying to grow inside her.
* if you smoke, you could have a low birth weight baby.
* a low birth weight baby has many health risks.

If that doesn't make you want to stop smoking I don't know what will. Maybe try getting on the patch, or some nicotine gum. Whenever you have the urge to smoke think of that beautiful baby inside who can be so horribly injured.
