Similar feelings
I have a very similar issue, except I have never ever thrown up because of it. After a lot of careful tinkering I have figured out my "specifics" if you will, of the symptoms.

It does not matter what I eat before I go to bed, or if I even eat before I go to bed, and it does not matter what the time gap between bed time and last eating time was. It also does not matter if I drink water before bed, before meals, etc. I have had it as long as I can remember, which would be at least since I was around 8 or so.

Every single morning, when I wake up, if it is between the hours of 9 and 11:30'ish, I feel as if I ate something bad. I feel nauseated, however not in the "I have to throw up NOW" sense. It's more like... I feel as if I just ate something that was very bad (undercooked food) and my stomach feels like that would. Usually, I have a bowel movement, and it is almost always quite soft rather than hard (not liquid however like diarrhea would be). I feel OK after this, but still when I think of eating or even look at food I feel sick as if I couldn't eat another bite, even though I haven't had one yet.

Eventually, after about an hour or so of feeling like this, it suddenly goes away COMPLETELY, I feel 100% better and on top of that, I get incredibly hungry with the stomach growling and all. I can eat a full course meal and I even feel like doing so usually.

I was diagnosed with a small form of GERD and have stomach irritation because of it, I am currently taking NOVO-RANADINE pills twice daily, in order to help with other symptoms of GERD. It helps those fantastically with no issues, but as I said, I have always had this morning nausea feeling since I was a child at least.

Again, I have yet to throw up, and I do not upchuck either in my mouth. I don't have diarrhea usually although I do have a very odorous (upset smelling) and soft bowel movement. The other ones I may have throughout the day are normal, and they do not smell very odorous and are a lot more solid than the ones I take in the mornings.

I cannot figure out what it is, obviously it cannot be something too serious or it would have gotten worse in the years since I was a child. I am 25 years old now, 5"10 @ 179 pounds. I try to work out every day, however (which is a partial reason to posting this) this morning nausea really hinders it sometimes.. Try working out when you feel sick, not fun.

Usually I have to FORCE food down for that hour or so that it lasts (usually 9-11:30 as I stated above), if I can. I manage a bowl of oatmeal, but this is getting really ridiculous and annoying, waking up like this every single day no matter what steps you wake beforehand...

Morning nausea no fun
I can't believe it.

I just found this thread. You mean I'm not the only one who feels horribly nauseous in the mornings!!! My god, you guys are like my long lost brothers and sisters.

Ok, heres my story.

I'm a 40 year old Male, dont drink, dont smoke cigs. My diet is on again off again.. salads one day. jack in the box tacos the next. I do tend to snack late at night before bed. go figure...

l've suffered with morning nausia and morning anxiety since high-school.

a typical morning would be...

wake up too early for no reason 4:30-5ish. Feel terribly nauseous and generally sick, weak and shaky. Slink to the bathroom, do a really un-fun gross #2 (soft and not formed), gag or even vomit. This feeling of weakness and sickness lasts a good bit of the morning at least 2-3 hours. I never eat breakfast, just the thought of food in the morning makes me sick. At its worst, I cant make it into work before like 11AM-noon. I've lost jobs and my career has suffered for it.,

The only thing i've found that work at all is to smokie a little pot right when you wake with the symptons. I know, winners don't use drugs, ydda, yadda, yadda...

But it works 100%. nausea goes away completely, hunger returns, and i'm functional in 10 min and able to get going.

So what else have i tried? my Dr had me on xanax or other Benzodiazapams immediately upon waking at one time to rule out nerves and that actually did help too. but it helped the anxiety and nerves only so i was calm and nauseous... still no fun.

Morninig Sickness Sucks
I am 32 years old and am so happy to have morning sickness friends.I was actually smiling reading everyones situation and thinking that's me. It started happening to me in the same time line as most freshman year in high school. I always contributed it to getting up early in the morning. The earlier I get up the sicker I feel. Most mornings I get up at 7:45 a.m. respectable time. When I roll out of bed the last thing I think about is eating, drinking a cup of coffee are you crazy! Do you want to kill me? I barely have room for toothpaste. Most of my mornings feel like Groundhog Day Round #1 Grab the paper and sit on the toilet for like 10 minutes hopefully. Stare in the mirror and psych myself up into brushing my teeth which usually ends with me vomiting white mucus and then somach acid into the sink than I feel a little beetter so I brush my teeth. Round #2 I take a shower, get dressed, feed the dog, Oh no! I have to go back and sit on the toilet but I just got out of the shower and got dressed. I don't have a choice. Round #3 usually ends up with me in my truck pulling out of the driveway only to pull back in to the driveway and sit on the toilet one more time usually sweating when I come back out. Thinking this sucks! Now its time to go to work. I know I can make it now. There is one thing that works for me and she has never let me down and her name is Mary Jane. Seriously in like 10 minutes after I feel so much better and an hour later like around 10 a.m. I'm hungry it's a miracle! If I am not lucky and don't get to see Mary I usually start to feel better around 11 a.m. and usually eat lunch around 1 p.m. I never eat breakfast only for dinner. My job is not stressful my hardest decision is what's for lunch? Like most on the weekends I get up when my body is ready and I'm fine, I feel great. It's just in the early morning I just thought I wasn't a morning person.

Try this....
Do you have a diabetic friend or family member? I would test your blood sugar level when you are feeling good and then compare it to the results of when you wake up and are feeling bad. This could be a blood sugar issue. Look up the normal range for blood sugar online. If your blood sugar is below normal in the mornings then you know what the issue is. Take the data of your results to your M.D.

Hey everyone I found this site and thought I would share my story. First of all I am a 21 yr old college student. About a month ago I thought I had the flu but after about 8 days of not getting better I went to a doctor because I vomited so much that morning and they put me on IV's because of my dehydration. I went home and the sickness was still there all day. A couple days later I went to the hospital to run tests and my stool tested positive for C. Diff Colitis. I spent a week on IV's and anti-biotics there and went home feeling much better. I was on the anti-biotics for another week after leaving the hospital. Although every morning I would still keep waking up with nausea until around 11pm, I could function normally the rest of the day. I have been out of the hospital for 2 and a half weeks now and just saw a GI doc. I am getting sicker again and they think my C. Diff has relapsed and are putting me back on a 2nd round of anti-biotics. Reading everyones posts though I have been experiencing all of it so I thought I would let everyone know what I have been diagnosed with. Every morning I wake up with nausea and I go to the bathroom with soft stool and sometimes I vomit yellow stomach mucus/acid. I am starting another round of vancomycin and will still be taking the Zofran for nausea. Since I've been on the Zofran (which if you get generic its like $10 for a prescription of 30) the nausea will go away around 9 if I take it at 7:30, instead of going away naturally at 11-12, which allows me get my school day going. I have had to miss about 2 weeks total of school this semester with being in the hospital or missing morning classes too sick to move. Hopefully my story will help some of you and I will be posting what happens to me after this 2nd round of meds. Good luck to all

5 years
This thread was started in 2004 and now 5 years later there are still no answers here. I too am glad to see others that have similar issues (so I know I'm not the only one), but at the same time, I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy.

My bouts of morning nausea recently started, about 2 weeks ago. I am 32, suffer from General Anxiety Disorder and Panic Attacks. I have been undergoing treatment for these disorders for almost three years now, but never had the "morning sickness" until recently. I am currently taking Xanax and Celexa for my GAD with PA and have been pretty stable up until these recent bouts of nausea that in and of themselves have created an anxiety nightmare for me. I always assume the worst.

After talking with my therapist about this on Monday, there are many things that she thinks could be causing this. I could have built up an immunity to my current medications and are experiencing withdrawal symptoms from them or they are not as effective as they once were. It could all be anxiety and stress related as I lead a very stressful life and the past few weeks have been extremely stressful for me. Or there could be underlying physical problems causing this to happen. Who knows?

I can't believe that some of you have been putting up with this for years! I have only had it about 2 weeks and it's driving me crazy. I'm experiencing the nausea when I first wake up, or sometimes right before I awake or am awakened by the nausea. Generally it lasts a few hours and it's gone. My one symptom that I haven't seen on here yet is that after it goes away, I am left terribly fatigued. Struggling to stay awake. That too only lasts about an hour or so, but not the best feeling while driving to work!

Sometimes my appetite returns, sometimes it doesn't. I have tried experiments because I thought that it was directly due to late night eating, but I have ruled that out by trial and error. Today, I am struggling to eat the lunch that my wife prepared for me. Taking little bites here and there when on a normal day, I would scarf the entire meal down in less than 5 minutes.

Anyhow, I am going to see my psychiatrist on Tuesday and if I learn anything helpful, I will post it here.

Holy Crap is it nice to know so many other people suffer from the same thing. I get morning sickness every single morning of my life. I definitely thought it was anxiety/stress related because it intensified during exam week or anytime i had a lot of work to do. It also increased a lot during times i felt a depressed. I saw a psychologist for a whole semester which really didnt help out at all. Sometimes though the nausea wont fully go away and will last the entire day and i have a lot of trouble eating in public and i have to eat very slow. The worst part of my morning is walking to class. Its seriously a battle to go to class every morning without throwing up. Ive puked in public about two or three times this year and those were some of the most embarassing moments of my life. I just tell people im really sick or hung over as an excuse and when i tell the truth to people they think its the weirdest thing in the world. It really affects my social life at times too, if i think about it too much ill automatically feel really nauseous in front of people and it makes it really awkward. I find that working out and running helps out so much. Also, when i go home for break or just a weekend my morning sickness definitely decreases, i think i just have less stress being home. I also think when i sleep i swallow a lot of spit or something. When i have my morning sickness i tend to swallow a lot spit and air i think and i have a lot of trouble burping it up, which then leads to puking. I really dont want to have to resort to any type of biomedical therapy but it seems like im going to have to. My mom thinks i should prob try some type of anxiety or antidepressant, which ill prob end up doin this summer. i cant believe there isnt some type of disorder or something for this yet there seems to be so many ppl with this. I dont think its CVS because my episodes dont last nearly as long as that. If i get my mind off the nausea and focus on something else it almost always goes away so im pretty sure my case mostly a mental thing. Stay strong everyone. im glad theres more ppl like me out there

also to add
I also wanted to say that i smoke a lot of cigarettes in times of stress and absolutely have to have one when i walk to class. It can distract me from my nausea, even though it prob isnt the best thing for me and doesnt help cure it at all. Also i constantly need some type of liquid in hand when i have my morning sickness. Something with a lot flavor works great like Hi-C or Iced Tea is awesome or just plain water. I need to take little sips everytime i feel like im gunna puke and it helps. Also does anyone else experience a loss of libido/sex-drive? Grumpy/cranky/exhausted for most of the day? Ive always had trouble paying attention in class and have been tested for ADD and ADHD like three times but have never been diagnosed. I have a very low self-esteem now, i cant remember what came first the nausea or the depression/anxiety. I constantly bring my self down on every little thing in my life. In high school i had this but not nearly as bad, im a sophomore in college now. In high school i was popular, played sports, and had no problem with dating girls. But in college this completely changed because i was so nervous about the change and i think that has some correlation to my sickness. By the way im very skinny im around 130 pounds and 5 ft 9-10 inches tall. my weight fluctuates up and down every few months from 125-140 depending on my depression/anxiety/morning sickness. Does anyone else have stuff like this in common?

male morning sickness
My 17 year old has suffered from what we always referred to as "mystery illness" all through his high school years. Most mornings he can drag himself out of bed to get to school which starts at 7:35 a.m. On some mornings he looks like hell. Often he has had insomnia or bouts of waking every few hours during the night. He never can eat breakfast. He does eat at lunch time because he suddenly feels better and has an appetite. I am not too encouraged that there seems to be no real cure or even a diagnosis. Allergies, stress, stomach acid, over-weight, under-weight? What is this?

Male morning sickness
I am 22 and have had the same problem for about 3 years. The only thing I have found to help (odd as it is) is to take a swig of orange juice after I wake up. It seems odd because of the acid and most of the time its hard to down it, but it seriously helps me. If anyone out there wants to give that a shot and tell us whether it helped it would be appreciated. Oh and marijuana helps too. Takes the nausea away and gives you a little bit of an appetite.

3 Years
As horrible as it sounds, it's nice to read about other people going through the same thing! My first recollection was about 3 years ago, when I started feeling very nauseous in the mornings. Over time, it's got worse and is now getting to the point where I'm quite down about it. My boyfriend lives about 90 minutes away, so we don't get to spend that many evenings together - but when we do, they always seem overshadowed by me having to sit up, get up, follow a silly routine in the morning because I feel so sick. I feel much worse (no mean feat!) if I have to get the train up, so I don't see him as much as I'd like, and I'm starting to worry about how it will affect our relationship. I'm moving up there in October, but I hope this problem doesn't destroy it before then.

I should point out I've never physically vomited from this, though often I cough up clear phlegm (but not in a "vomiting way" if that makes any sense!). Every morning tends to start with a bowel movement (or several), regardless of what/whether I ate the night before, what time I last ate or whether I went to the toilet the night before. One thing I find is that having anything to drink before I go to bed makes me feel much worse in the mornings. On bad attacks of it, I get very hot, flushed, rapid pulse and shaking.

I think some of it is anxiety - it's there every morning, but it practically disables me if I have to go on the train, do a Drama performance, even though they don't bother me. I'm still going to my GP - so far we've tried beta-blockers, medication for stomach acid and acid reflux, anti-depressants, anti-nausea tablets and now I've just started taking Betahistine Hydrochloride (used to treat vertigo and the symptoms that come with that). I've also been referred to a Gastroenterologist and the Mental Health Service - we think that it might be a physiological problem exacerbated by an anxiety disorder.

Anyone got any other ideas? I'm an 18 year old male, otherwise healthy, 5ft10 and about 10 stone.

morning nausea
In many cases when people sleep, the digestive system doesnt, it keeps working throughout the night....when you eat heavy or upsetting food the night before this can cause upset stomach, especially when you introduce breakfast. If you have something to do in the morning your mind subconciously counts down to the event and builds up anxiousness. These are just a few of the symptoms that may combine to produce a feeling of nausea. But if you are sure that its not any combination of things caused externally you should consider A Mild Hypoglycemia , Hypotension, Pregnancy For Females, Insommnia, Obesity, Anemia.

ive got it too
Hey, i am a 20 year old male and have got the same thing. Anytime i wake up early in the morning i feel nauseous, and have gas. Definitely not related to stress as it happens any day i wake up early, and i never really worry about what is to come. I am quite thin and very fit otherwise but have had this for a couple of years.

just to add a bit
ok when i wrote that i didn't read the full thread only the first page of posts, now that i have read the whole thing, I also just wanted to add that I also get all the bowl movement stuff usually a couple of times in the morning with the soft, quite smelly stools.
I picked up on something else people were saying in relation the flem/mucus i generally have quite a lot throughout the day that i bring up with my throat and just spit out and im thinking that it could be that collecting up and making me feel sick in the morning.
During the day it wouldnt really affect me because i am constantly eating and as such theres also food in my stomach to provide a solid base.
However at night this is not the case.
With the fact that it happens only when i wake up early in the morning Im thinking its because that would be the time the most flem would be collected up in your stomach, because if you sleep until late your stomach would process out most of it ie. you sleep through it when it is the worst but if you get up early you feel it.
Also would explain why when people eat, or like someone said have some orange juice you are putting other stuff in your stomach and diluting the flem.
Also would explain why some people who seem to have it worse than me are actually awoken by it early in the morning, i am generally a pretty heavy sleeper and i guess just sleep through it and feel fine in the later morning, or if i need to wake up early wake up into the nausea.
I am going to try eating atleast a little bit right after waking up, and that should speed up the process to feel better.

Re: Cannabinoid hyperemesis
Be careful to blame Cannabis. Cannabinoid hyperemesis includes cyclic bathing in hot water to relieve the emesis. This is a hallmark feature of the condition. If you're not getting relief from the emesis from bathing you're probably not suffering from cannabinoid hyperemesis.

Thought I was alone... but i've got the cure/cover up...
I'VE GOT THE CURE!!!

I couldn't believe when I was reading most of these, because I've had the same effects and always thought i was the only one.

Morning sickness is a living hell... I'm currently a 22/m and I've had this severe problem since grade school when i would throw up while walking to my bus stop. It went away during my middle school years but one morning in jr high I fell asleep on the bus and woke up and it was back and hasn't left. The best way for me to describe it is the way a hangover makes your stomach feel (without the dizziness) every morning. I would have pre-planned an "escape route" when i was in class at school to make me feel calm enough not to vomit. Im sure it deals with something due to stress because it gets the worse when im stressing something or have something important to do. I Couldn't take gym class/weight lifting in the morning and would/have to sometimes pause what im doing and be silent or else i will start to gag/vomit. Like the rest of you mine goes away around lunch time. I use to be able to vomit and feel ok after that but these past few years that doesn't work as well. I've taken zantac, tums, purple pill, but the only thing that seems to work for me is POT. i can feel sick then hit a bowl and i feel good enough to EAT or do physical activity. I know this isnt an alternative for most of you but it really does work. And this morning sickness problem is not due to excessive pot smoking or eating before you sleep so go ahead and shoot those ideas down....

MY CURES/COVER UP:
1. Just go ahead and throw up and get it over with. After i vomit it seems like it makes the sickness a little more tolerable if not eliminates it.
2. Have a comfort zone: Having a plastic bag or an available bathroom (anywhere outside is my comfort zone) or even an "escape route" planned incase the sickness became intolerable. Doing this always seemed to help keep me at ease and relax
3. (SAY NO TO DRUGS KIDS) but smoking has really been the only cure for me.

Morningman:
Hi there,
What you mentioned is precisely what is wrong with me as well. (refer to you post 30 May 2005). I have gone nuts controlling this nauseau feeling...totally nuts.... I am 36 yrs old now, but i strongly believe too it is related to some sort of stress, work, play or whatever stress that i may be thinking of in terms of future dated work or anything.

will appreciate your reply back. thx
