Q: Recovering From Bulimia - Now Weight Gain!

Hi,

i'm 25 and i've had bouts of bulimia and compulsive bingeing and dieting nearly all my life. I've binged and vomited for the past 3 and a half years, sometimes up to 5 times a day. I am in therapy (cognitive behavioural), and it's going really well. I haven't vomited or binged for 2 months, and i'm eating a healthy 2,000 calorie diet (i need this much because I am very tall), I exercise moderately nearly every day (jogging, sit-ups). I can even allow myself 'bad' foods (e.G. Chocolate) in moderation, but rarely. While I am very happy and relieved that it's working - and believe me, if I can do it, then anyone can! - I have put on a stone, and my weight is climbing. I will be overweight if this goes on (i have calculated my body mass index, it's nearly 24). I know it's early days and all part of the process, but I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this, what you did and how long it took you to get back to normal? I know about all the theoretical background (metabolism etc.) so my question is not about why I am putting on weight, I understand why I am. I was just wondering if I have to reduce my caloric intake in order to lose all the weight i've put on? Or will it 'drop off' by itself? Doctors, counsellor etc. All say it depends on the individual, so I am interested in the experience of anyone on this board. I am worried that if this continues, I will start dieting again, and then, as a consequence, bingeing and vomiting. And I don't ever want to go down that road again.

Thanks in advance!

J

I was bulemic for 6 years. I am 30 now and yes I fight my weight. Part of it is just age sweetie. As we grow older the metabolism slows down. It took me seven or eight months for my weight to even out. I will never be that perfect small size again but I watch my weight and try to exercise regularly. Unfortunately bulemia usually screws up metabolism and add age and it is tough to maintain a good weight but it can be done. You just have to work at it.
