Tooth pain after filling
well... I just had my left lower wisdom tooth filled today (new cavity, new filling literally 6 hours ago) with the composite stuff and the freezing came out around 3 hours ago and this pain is almost as bad as abcess tooth pain.... I called the dental office and they told me it could be a "few days" for it to settle down. Hmmm... $147.20 for one little filling and the dentist told me nothing about it possibly generating months if pain... She told me that it sets immediately so i can eat and drink right away opposed to silver fillings which you have to not chew on for the rest of the day......The weird thing about this whole experience is that I have had composite on my top front teeth along the gum line a few years back and had no issues whatsoever afterwards.
the only thing that is dulling the pain is Tylenol#3 (codeine) and I know from past usage that it won't be long til my gut is rotten and I feel like garbage - add to all of this I had a hysterectomy 3 weeks ago yesterday.... WAHHHHHHH

Teeth
that is quite expensive , I pay 125 pound for two fillings and x-ray with the whole teeth examiniation...I hate silver fillings , they look disgusting, My clinic never uses them, I think they should be banned. The clinic I wrote about uses really innovative methods and offers good prices. Well, Good luck with your teeth, people:)

Pain after white fillings... how long will this last??
Hi, I just want to say I am having EXACTLY the same problem!! I had a white filling done just over a week ago as it was near to the front of my mouth and i didnt want a silver filling....OHHHHHHH HOW I REGRET THAT DECISION NOW!!!! ... after a week of agony and constant painkillers I went back to the dentist and he filed it down saying that he would improve the bite, blah blah same old story, so 5 days later and i am still in pain..some days its not so bad and other days its really painful, I dont know how people can live with this for months. My advice is to just ask to have it replaced with a silver filling, even vanity is not worth this pain. Other pain killers I have found useful is Clove oil which you can buy from any pharmacy.. it stinks and tastes awful but it does relieve it slightly,

please if anyone finds anymore pain solutions please post.

I think you visit some strange doctors. I never feel any pain after my visits to the dental clinic I wrote about...I had it once before. Teeth have to get used to new fillings or maybe something got into your tooth...?

I had 2 Onlays on my lower left molars put in a month ago. The Dentist said my old molars from childhood was cracked and that an onlay was a better solution than a root canal ect. However now I am in pain!!! At first the onlays felt fine except for a few jagged edges. She sanded them down and then the pain began...I have tmj and it messed with that a little too. Now I am getting random peircing pain that makes my jaw tingle. I don't know if this is part of the "onlays" adjusting or if they just coverered up a bigger issue already there via a root canal? I clench and grind so I've been wearing my mouth guard at night but the pain is still getting worse. Randomly it will take over all sensation and cause me to want to take my own teeth out! I'm going to the dentist this week. I'm worried they will give me some response like many of you got. That this pain wont get better and go away. Any advice?

Pain after white filling
I had a white filling done for the first time over a month ago, i didnt even know i had a cavity until the dentist told me, it didnt bother me at all, now that i got the filling its been bothering me ever since. I went back a week after i got the filling to get the bite adjusted, still didnt help, i ended up going three more times to get the "bite adjusted", the fourth time i went, the dentist decided to redo the filling, and its still bothering me, i went back and saw another dentist but at the same place, he said everything looked fine, but when he touched my tooth with the metal tool, it hurt soooooooo bad, i screamed...so he told me to use sensodyne cause he just said my tooth is real sensitive...but its still not helping...i cant eat french fries, bacon, chips, toast on that tooth cause it hurts like crazy, im supposed to go back tomorrow, but im thinking about seeing a root canal specialist...im so upset cause my tooth was fine before they messed with it!! i feel like taking them to court!!

Yet another story here! My trouble all started when I changed dentists 2 years ago after moving house. I'd never had any problems before. Well, the new dentist took xrays & referred me to hospital for 3 of my wisdom teeth extracting under a general. On the day of the surgery everything was fine. I remember coming round in the recovery room feeling no pain, no swelling & being able to fully move my jaw. I was immediately given a sandwich & a drink & ate & drank fine. The surgeon called at my bedside about an hour after my surgery to let me know that they'd only been able to remove 2 of my teeth (top left & bottom right) as the bottom right had been 'a bit of a swine to get at' & they didn't want to traumatise my jaw too much. Obviously you just just accept what the professionals say don't you? Anyway I was discharged the same day without any prescriptions.

A day or 2 after I started with incredible pain in the bottom right socket & this would not shift with ordinary painkillers. I just thought 'here's the pain that everyone else has told me about' & tried to cope with it. A week after the surgery the pain was so bad I was apparently overdosing on painkillers & was almost going insane with the pain. I had to visit A & E at the local hospital & was informed that I had 'dry socket'. The dental specialist treated this for me (thank God!) & after a week or so it started to heal. However he also told me that the tooth next to the socket looked as if it had been badly knocked during the surgery & the root & nerve were exposed. He advised that I should see my own dentist as soon as the dry socket had been cured for more surgery.

When I went to my dentist about 2 weeks later (in absolute agony by now from the damage done but no longer suffering from dry socket) she was really shocked at the state I was in. I had to have the damaged tooth extracted under a local & about an inch of my jaw had disintegrated due to infection.

Since then she has told me that my jaw is still suffering from trauma & I have developed Periodontal disease. Apparently, all of my teeth are slightly loose & I have to have extensive cleaning done every 3 months to try & save them. I can only stand this under a local. I had 2 fillings done 2 days ago (again with a local) & I am still in pain. Its getting to the point where I'm thinking of having them all out & wearing dentures!

Who would think that something so small as a tooth could cause such pain?

Good luck everyone

Cold Sensitivity after filling...Cured!
I had two cavities filled a week ago and both are extremely sensitive to cold.

I'm supposed to go back for two more fillings but after reading all these posts, I'm feeling aprehensive.

This motivated me to do some research. I first looked into the cause of cavities (bone and tooth decay). It all comes down to a deficiency in the following vitamins and minerals: Vitamin C, A, D, K1, K2, Phophorus, and Calcium.

In the 1930's, Dr. Weston Price discovered this while studying aboriginal natives with perfect teeth.

Find foods and supplements with the above mentioned minerals and vitamins and you will begin to re-grow healty teath.

Did you parents ever give you a teaspoon of cod liver oil everday?

Sedative Filling Still not Helping Pain
I had my first filling at 60 years old. It was a composite filling and I had throbbing pain for 4 weeks. Went back and had x-ray that my dentist said was OK. He explained that some people don't do well with a composite filling. He drilled out the composite and replaced it with a temporary sedative filling. Two weeks later I'm still having throbbing pain. I go back in two more weeks to have the sedative filling removed and some type of white filling put in for sensitive teeth. Since I'm still in pain now, I'm really concerned that the third time will not work either. I have throbbing pain in nearby teeth and dull pain all the way to my ear on that side of my face. Can someone suggest questions I need to ask my dentist before this third filling is done? I'm afraid I might have some nerve damage or something else bad. Thanks.

It looks like this is a common thing. I had my final amalgam filling removed two weeks ago and it felt like a wooden tooth clacking because it wasn't filled right. So I went back and he just kept filing down the enamel more, plus the molar beside it. Now they are throbbing with pain and I'm afraid to go back again. Like everyone else I'm cursing myself for doing this when the old filling wasn't hurting me, and causing myself pain I didn't have before! The only reason I did it is because the other molars that had amalgam in them had cracked because of the expansion and contraction of the metal, and they had to be extracted! I grind my teeth and already have so much pain in my jaw, I'm frustrated and also distrustful now of the dentists who say they want to help you. What to do now?

Pain after fillings
I had similar problems with fillings in my front teeth. Endless pain afterwards, what seemed like weekly visits to the dentist for ages, excuses excuses, root canal...eventually I had them out.
I now have a small plate. I don't regret it - I love to live my life pain-free.
I don't think dentistry is an exact science. I think often they're drilling round in the dark with their fingers crossed.

on and off dull throbbing - almost pressure-like ;/
hi all and thanks for creating this post here. i feel bad for everyone else that is experiencing this pain ;/

my story starts where i was eatting some pita chips one day (very hard batch) and after a few days of eatting these my teeth started to hurt and couldnt eat on one side for a few days. I looked in the mirror and noticed that a small darkish spot had just appeared in the center of one of my lower back teeth. I went to check it out and the dental assistant used that diagnodent on my teeth and it started making a bunch of different tones over this one tooth and said it sounded liek a small cavity. im almost 30 and never had a cavity before but i trusted this new technology ;/. anyhow, i asked the dentist about it and she told me that x-rays cant detect center cavities and it was prob a small cavity that could be laser removed. did the surgery and got a composit tooth-colored filling and now my tooth has like a dull throbbing off and on. when i move my jaw in certain ways it aches too. its not hot or cold sensistive at all but seems like its a pressure inside of there. on top of it all, i had pretty much no ware on any of my teeth tips and this dentist took off all the points of this tooth and now i am biting down and not making contact with half my mouth. i went to another dentist about that issue and he told me there was nothing he could do to fix my bite without sawing down the other half of my mouth and said he felt sorry for me. needless to say i am pretty depressed and not sure if i even had a cavity in the first place. i feel like i was wronged and i don't know what i should do? can anyone please offer me some advice? i am not sleeping so well for the last month Sad

Sedative Filling
Hello Everyone
The pain in my left lower molar started one lunchtime when I was eating. It was so bad I couldn't speak for about 5 minutes! I made an emergency appt. at the dentist. They took an x-ray and said that the filling had cracked and showed me where the infection had spread around the tooth. I was put an antibiotics which I thought would miraculously take away the pain, but they didn't. I went back after a week and a half and the dentist put in a sedative filling. That was just under a week ago. I now have a contant dull throbbing pain, the bite is all wrong and I have to eat on my right side. My whole face feels'strained' and I have to make a conscious effort to relax my face. When I bend over to pick something up, there's a sharp pain in my tooth. The dentist asked me to book another appt. in 3 weeks time but I am going back tomorrow as I am totally miserable with this whole thing.

Good Luck to you all with your teeth!

Wow! I can't beleive a didn't read this blog sooner. I have been at the dentist almost every week. first I got two teeth filled and they were killing so they gave me a root canal ( which from the looks of this I don't know was necassary) then they did three other filling which also killed, but now the dentist keeps filling them down. Mortin really helps, but I don't want to have to take it for the next year. I'm so upset at this whole dental system. I still have three more cavities to fill. P.S my teeth felt fine before I started all this dental work

I had a nightmare for 8 months last year when my dentist tried to do a root canal therapy on a back molar. He left it open for a month because it was like a volcano! In 4 weeks I had 8 courses of different antibiotics and many many painkillers for the gaseous infection in the bone. My pain only stopped when my chiropractor adjusted my jaw (TM joint was dislocated) so it is worth a check. I ended up begging him to pull out the tooth and it was pretty obvious it was cracked which meant the whole effort was a waste of time.

POSSIBLE SOLUTION at end:
06/10/09 I went to have my teeth cleaned. The dentist said I needed an amalgam filling replaced as he could get a pick under the edge of it but i could leave it a bit longer. The filling was over twelve years old so I decided not to be a wimp and get it replaced and he said it would take 15 mins. He put in a white amalgam filling without mentioning the pros and cons and removed more enamal than he should of. Straight away after the injection wore off I started feeling pain wich effected my work and really got me down. I couldn't close my jaw properly and it felt like I had a cap on the tooth. The filling was very sensitive and later I lerned he hadn't checked and filed it correctly. I went back the very next day 07/10/09 as I was so uncomfortable my jaw hurt as I couldn't close it properly. Heand filed down, again he removed a bit of enamel which really annoyed me having asked him not (i could smell burning hair which is tooth being drilled)and alot of the filling drilled off. He used marking paper to find uneven bits which should of been done the first day after the filling. I could close my mouth again and it felt far more comfortable. But the tooth was still very sensitive the filling felt very rough on the tongue so he polished it which made a slight difference to the smoothness but I had dull throbing pains. Dentist said to come back after 2 weeks. I asked him if there could be bubbles in the filling causing the roughness and he said no and that the white filling will last as long as an amalgam filling. Went to see another dentist 10/10/09 as didn't take any x-rays and i was worried. The pain was bad and I was leaving my jaw open to try and stop the pain. The next dentis said the carving was good and he couldn't see any problems but I might need root canal work to fix it (thats bollicks getting the filling replaced before root canal work)!!!! He advised I take anti inflamatories (i chose ibuprofen not much relief but was using it for anti inflam as opposed to pain relief) and I should go back to the original dentist if the pain persists.
15.10.09 After taking anti inflamatory the tooth still felt sensitive especially if I ran my tongue over it. It felt like tin foil touching an amalgam filling but the filling felt alot smoother because the sensitivity was less! I still had throbing sensations pains in the jaw, neck, ear and temple plus the tooth above the filing was sore and my bite was off with pressure on the front bottom teeth which are pushing against top front teeth. Also I had pain when I closed the jaw right in the centre of the filling and only slightly less if left the jaw open. Went straight back to the dentist on the 15th he took an x-ray put ice on the tooth hit the tooth with a lump of metal scrapped the filling but could find no problems or reactions which means the filling should be okay oh and blew air and water over it (he expected me to jump out of the chair with pain). He said he could see nothing wrong and the fillingwas fine. He said he would file it again butI said Id leave it longer as the fileing would hurt to much and see if the pain would go away with more anti inflamatories he agreed and said he would ask his collegues for advice.
20.10.09 Still continuos pain, after eating rice which was a bit under cooked a bit was chewed right in the middle of the filling and it really hurt. This seemed to excite the nerve and all the pains got really bad, so sensitive that if I sucked air over the tooth it was really sore! If I pushed the filling with my finger it hurt and I had pains in the jaw temple and just below the ear on the neck again. Straight away i booked an appointment to see the dentist asap. 21.10.09 spoke to the dentist on the phone and he said to come straight in and said he had figured out what might be causing the problem. Luckily and this is the KEY he had a picture of the filling before it was replaced. After speaking with his colleagues and telling them the symptons and comparing before and after pics they ascertained that my tooth facets were off. Tooth facets are dents or small holes from the pressure of the two teeth pressing against each other. He drilled back one hole at the back of the filling and straight away the pain was relieved. When I walked out of the surgery the pain had really calmed down.
The next day the pain was gone but I had new problems my bight was off and so my other teeth hurt for a while. Its uncomfortable to close the mouth but I can eat food without bad pain now.
The next day the pain started comming back and I was really angry with the tooth so I bought chewing gum and chewed on the tooth really hard with the gum in between. I had pain when I chew but when I finish chewing the gum it took about half an hour for the pain to go away but afterwards I could eat on it with less pain and senitivity. Now everyday I chew gum on the filling and the pain has mainly gone away to the extent I can eat food normally again without any pain. I still get the odd shot of pain when Im just resting the jaw but I can concentrate on my work again and dont feel depressed anymore which I really did before.
I suggest always get a picture taken of teeth before filling them to compare before and after. I think alot of you have a problem with tooth facets but your dentist probably cant tell where to put them back on the filling as he wontknow where they were. Basically your other tooth is pressing against the one with the filling directly onto the filling which is aggravating the nerve and not allowing the swelling to calm down. Perhaps they can take a cast of the tooth pressing on thefillingand put the dents back which correspond. Appart from sensitivity to hot|cold things I had all your symptons and a bit of hot cold the odd time. I know how you all feel especially when 3 days ago my flat mate had four amalgam fillings replaced with white and he's had no problems whatsoever and the same with other people I ask. And your sitting there with this nagging throbing pain luckily its gone for me mainly and on Thursday comming will be two weeks since the facet or dent was put back so by then it maybe gone altogether. The dentist said he will make some small adjustments if the pain persists. If for some reason the pain comes back I going to see a specialist consultant and finally if no solution getting the filling replaced again. Good luck to you all and I hope this may help some of you God bless.

Dental work
Fillings should not be that painful! However, I too found my root canals less painful than the fillings! There is also a real condition regarding phantom pain after your teeth should be on the mend. It can be treated in a few different ways. Look it up and read about it. Everytime I have any work done on my teeth I experience pain for a week to two weeks after the procedure. Phantom pain is real and quite a few patients suffer from it after dental work.

a few years back I went to the dentist and he suggested a gold filling for which he took a mould of my teeth. About a week later I went back to have it inserted (he had to send the mould off for the filling to be made) and it was cemented in place. However, it never fitted properly. There was always a slight gap where you could get a fingernail under and the filling fell out several times over the next 2 years and was always just recemented in. I now have a new dentist who is very good and when it again fell out she couldn't see why i needed the gold filling in the first place (probably because it cost more!!) so she filled the gap with a tooth coloured filling and now when i run my tongue over it it feels wonderful. However, The pain i am experiencing is the worst pain of my life. I am going back tomorrow and will ask for the gold filling to be put back. I would rather just have it replaced every 6 months than not sleep, eat, think etc ever again. I tried myself to pick out the filling with the business end of some tweezers but she did such a good job it is going nowhere. I founf this forum looking for ways to pull out tooth. That's how desperate i am! I'm just glad i founf that this is a common problem so maybe the dentist will understand and not just think that i'm wasting her time
