I just found this site and actually feel a little better reading it. I just got teeth filled two weeks ago and it is throbbing! I just know I'm going to go back and they will tell me that I need a root canal but the filling had nothing to do with it! What a racket!! I felt no pain before he did this filling, I didn't even know I had a cavity, now suddenly I can't even chew? What the heck? If it turns out I need a root canal I'm going to a specialist and not letting the general practice dentist get more of my money!

I am so mad and frusterated over fillings. I had fillings on my top and bottom teeth on the left side of my mouth 2 weeks ago. I take Ibprofen and Tylenol every 3 hours because I can't stand the pain. I called my Dentist to see if this is normal. They tell me that it's normal if they were large fillings and they can't see me for 2 months because they are so booked!! So I half to coninue being in pain. I can't eat or drink and I get so frusterated I cry because it just hurts so bad!! I have been in pain for months now because 3 months ago I had a deep cleaning a rootcanal and a tooth pulled in the same day. I went 3 weeks in excruciating pain before my dentist could see me again turns out I had a dry socket as well and was put on Penecilin and given a mouth rinse of some sort. Mind you I have only been to this Dentist twice now not including the time I went to find out I had a dry socket. I never want to go back!! I was not given any choice or even told I had a choice of different types of fillings. It's just ridicalous they can't get me in for 2 months I am so pissed!!!

Dental is one of the most profitable business in the world.
By average, if you stick with one single dentist, that dentist will make USD10,000 from each of your teeth in 15 years. Is that amazing? Sure, that is reality, too. So, if you have evidence, just sue them. They have plenty money.

YOu need to find a good reputable dentist. Not all dentist will let you live with pain......Mine for example would "work me in a spot" whether I had an appointment or not. Ask around and find out who people go too and what they like about that person. My dentist will also ensure you do not feel ANYTHING when he is working on your teeth. If need be, go to a little kids dentist! They are gentle and understanding. It has come ot my attention those people who have no insurance and can't pay, have a certain dentist they have to see....I know for a fact of one dentist in our area, and they treat people a lot different than my own dentist....and I feel this is jsut WRONG. All people should be treated with respect regardless if they are able to pay or not. I do hope you guys find a good dentist!

tooth pain I hear that
so it has been quite a few years since I have been to the dentist, so finally my husband talked me into going. I have kille insurance that pays for it all. so the dentist said you have 8 cavities 4 on each side, 2 top and 2 bottom, so I went in and had the left side done, then 3 days later the right side done, now 2 weeks later my teeeth are killing me, he gave me vicodin which does not work, all it does is make me sick to my stomache, I can't sleep and am up all night with this major pain, I can eat. I think I have lost 5 pounds already (woo hoo btw, lol)any how is this normal? and will this pain ever go away? and like my husband said once a doctor/dentist sees you have insurance that pays for a lot then all the sudden you have something wrong. I just want to know if any one has the same pain I do and when/if/will it go away???

so aggrivated!!
I was reading all the blogs and couldn't help but feel relief!
I had two cavities filled 9 days ago with the white fillings and I still have serious pain.
I have more pain now then when I went in to get them filled!
Long story short, I went back to the dentist and they ofcourse did a bite test and grinded the filling down a little bit but it is still very sensitive. The severity of the pain comes and goes but is always there. I am so aggrivated!!! I think I will go back next week

tooth pain and sensitivity after filling replacement
Decided to check in again and update the forum. It's been 3 1/2 months since I had an old amalgam filling replaced in #14. Still some dull aches/sensitivity, but nothing terrible. When I read other folks' posts, 2 thoughts come to mind. Why do some dentists do so much dental work in one sitting, e.g., fill 2-3 teeth at one time? This doesn't make sense to me as filling even 1 tooth at once time is stressful on the tooth. The other thought is that there are some very good dentists out there and not all dentists are unresponsive and unconcerned about their patients' welfare.

pain after filling
I also am having the same issue..had filling replaced one week ago and I went from a composite filling, which I started to have issues with biting on that tooth to a silver filling and I have been having episodes of horrible pain that shoots up my jaw into my ear whenever I aggravate it by eating something hot or cold, then I have to take advil or tylenol to be able to bear the pain. I hope this goes away soon but from the sound of the entries here it won't...UGHH!!!!

5 fillings later.....
I had 5 silver fillings done 10 days ago. One on every side of my mouth (upper and lower) and two on one side. My left side does not bother me but i am experiencing TREMENDOUS pain on both the upper and bottom on my right (the top right being the worst).... The pain wakes me up at night, and i have started to dream about having my teeth ripped out and then I wake up in pain. (weird) So I went to the dentist and she "re-adjusted" a couple of the fillings saying that 2 of them were "high" and maybe it was my bite. She said sensitivity can last 4 to 6 weeks. Im sorry, but I can't hold out that long. Of course hot and cold send shooting pains to my temples and ears. The night time is the worst but I am taking extra strength tylenol every 2 to 3 hours (which is getting annoying). She gave me a desensitizer which has done nothing. Just a side note too, I had NO pain before having these cavities filled, in fact would never have guessed I had a cavity at all based on how well I take care of my teeth. She said if it gets worse to come back and we can do an xray. I have already paid 1000 dollars each for 2 root canals in the past (having poor dental coverage) and I will be very angry if I need one bc of something that has gone bad in the procedure of the fillings. She has given me no pain meds or antibiotics. I am very sad and am actually in extreme pain right now sitting at work.......

first composite. Not too sure...
I was in pain the first day of a replacement filling. Day two wasn't as bad and it seems to be getting better, although I'll need it adjusted.

This was to replace one that had broken, but the dentist recommended two more replacements since the silver ones were leaking. My other dentist didn't notice that last year. How quickly do these fillings all of a sudden start leaking? I think I'll hold out on those for now.

I also wasn't told any cons to composite, although I was given a lengthy disclosure to sign as soon as I sat down before the procedure. I wish they would have given it to me before I left so I could have looked at it a little more thoroughly.

Also, I don't like the way it feels on my tongue. It always feels like there is bread or something mashed in there that I need to dig out.

While most of the pain is gone, I'm fearful of what I've read here and hope the pain doesn't come back.

4 fillings update, bite issue but keep an eye on it
so the dentist took an x-ray of mine, showed filling was deep and near the root, she ground some more to adjust my bite and told me to let her know how it goes
she said it should get better gradually

I have So much pain and sensitivity
Antyitme I bite down on my tooth where I too have a not so deep white filling the pain is ridiuclous.I tlingers long after I put pressure on it. The funny thing is the toothe in front of the very painful tooth is the one with the very deep composite filling, and at first I thought that was the tooth causing me pain. It's been 7 months and after x-rays and going to an endodontist, I'm told there is nothing wrong!!! Are they crazy!? I am disgusted. I've been so fortunate I've never had tooth issues. I'm almost tempted just to pull them out.

Replaced tooth-colored filling with silver and no more pain!
Hey everyone, my story: Got 3 tooth-colored fillings in three teeth in a row last October 2008. Wisdom-Molar-Molar. Wisdom was new cavity, two molars were replacements for 20yr old silver fillings.

Fillings were too high, and after two weeks had bad jaw pain. Went back, he ground them down and went home, jaw pain subsided over the next week or so.

Then started having shooting pain whenever chewing crunchy things in only 1 of the 3 teeth. If it hit just the right spot... ouch!

6 months later couldn't take it, had him grind it out and put in a temporary filling. Immediate 60% improvement, but pain not gone.

1 month later (yesterday), went back and asked him to put silver filling in, do not want another tooth-colored (composite) filling b/c of what I read here on this thread.

Well this morning I ate cereal for the first time in 6 months without pain!

Maybe the second time he did the composite it would have set properly, but I didn't want to take the chance! Just give me the metal and now I can be happy again!

Everyone, don't take chances with composite on back teeth unless you know the risks. You can get air bubbles, or not have it set right, and get this kind of pain. Not worth the time and trouble of multiple dentist appts. Just get silver, you won't get poisoned and they do the job.

Sensitive to white fillings?
Hey all,

I came by this site browsing the internet for information about white tooth fillings. I am 37 years old and I have had only 2 cavities in my life and the first one ended up in a root canal. The dentist told me this cavity was small and went ahead to fill it. It was located on the top back molar on the left side of my mouth. I wanted the white filling and that was what we went with. Well, that cavity ended up in a root canal. Now here it is 2 years later and they want to fill another small cavity. This tooth is located in the bottom front of my mouth. We again used the white filling and we are a month after the filling and the thing still hurts. He adjusted the tooth 4 times and even had the tooth above it filed down. Sigh, now it hurts to even chew a piece of gum. It feels like a nerve is being touched or something. Is it really possible that I will NEVER be able to have white filings? Could I really be sensitive to this stuff? I really, really, don't want to get the silver stuff. At the same time, I don't want to have a mouth full of dead teeth. I have been prescribed some antibiotics and I have been told that if the pain goes away than I have to get the root canal again. If it doesn't than I guess they will do something else. Anyone else have this happen to them 2 times in a row?

It's not the dentist fault right? I just want to be reassured I guess. I have not been to any other dentists.

Thanks in advance!!

BAD DENTISTRY
I too, have recently gone to a "questionable" dentist for fillings (with no previous pain in a tooth) only to have that tooth filled with a resin composite filling that is still giving me pain, over two weeks later. I think that my dentist drilled too deeply, because he hit my nerve twice while drilling! I can't eat hard foods on the left side of my mouth because of a sharp, localized pain in my molar..and have to take acetaminophen when the throbbing becomes too much (usually late at night). I personally think that dentists intentionally mess up your teeth so that they can just say "you will probably need a root canal" like my dentist told me that day. I am growing to despise dentist in general at this point because a root canal is not covered under my dental insurance. Until I decide what to do, I will just continue to take pain meds and eat soft food because I am not parting with over a $1000 of my hard-earned dollars just yet! I may have him adjust the bite or take the composite filling out and put in an amalgam filling. He never asked me which type I wanted anyway! DO NOT LET A DENTIST JUST DO A PROCEDURE WITHOUT EXPLAINING IT TO YOU FIRST...IT'S YOUR TEETH THAT WILL FEEL THE PAIN, NOT HIS!

fillings and pain
I had over eight of the dark fillings taken out and the white ones put in and I have had terrible pain ever since they told me I should get a filling in a cavity that was forming in my front tooth so I agreed never felt pain in this tooth until they filled it. since then they have had to adjust my bite several times and are now telling me i need a root canal in my front tooth that was never hurting until they touched it my insurance only covers the root canal it does not cover the crown that has to be put on afetrwardsso now I am hoping the pain will just go awayall I have to say is if your tooth is not hurting dont let them touch it. my gums are still sore they are white around those teeth and i cant eat hard things. I hate the pain that I am going through and that they keep saying you may need a couple root canals like they are 10 bucks a piece or something give me a break maybe after a while I will finally go 1 day without any tooth and mouth pain.

To follow up on what I posted the last time, I am glad for forums like this one where I can read about others who have had similar problems with their teeth like the problems I am having with mine now. How do you go from "you have good-looking teeth" to "you will probably need a root canal" in 6 months' time? Did my current dentist (I am currently looking for his replacement) just not pay attention to my X-rays or have any kind of charted plan for my care? I truly think that some dentists just don't give a damn as long as they know you have insurance that will pay for procedures. To beat all, at my last appointment my dentist told me "relax, I haven't lost anybody yet" when I was showing signs of apprehension at what he was about to do to me. I should have jumped up out of the chair and never looked back!!!!

Does the pain go away?
I just want to cry while reading all of this. I had my teeth filled on the bottom left a week and a half ago and the right bottom done yesterday. I didn't have decay but my teeth were eroded leaving deep grooves that food got stuck in. I also experienced heaps of sensitivity. So did the "right" thing and got them filled. I never had the new tooth coloured fillings before and i wish they never existed!
My bite felt wrong following the first but he didn't ask me how it felt before he stopped grinding so i went back the next week and reported the pain like hitting a nerve when biting on that side and my teeth not matching up. He did an adjustment and mumbled about the pain then proceeded to do my other side with fillings. That was yesterday. He once again didn't ask me how it felt after adjusting the teeth after filling so i knew I'd be back. Went back today for some more adjusting. Now I have a gnawing throb and nerve pain when i bite down on both sides in particular spots. the bite still is niggling me but Im worried that he will cause more sensitivity by adjusting the bite again.
I too am supposed to go back and get fillings in the top on both sides and am sickened by the thought. I think I will cancel the appointment and cross my fingers that this feeling is temporary and not permanant.
I feel so awful after spending so much money trying to make them feel better and having made things worse.
The filling material does not feel anything like tooth either its like concrete with a slightly chalkier furrier feeling. Its gross. Please someone post and tell me that they too had this sensation and that eventually it went away. In need of hope.

Irudis, I am NOT a dentist but I might be able to help you somewhat. I can tell you that my pain is indeed subsiding (after a whole month!). You might benefit from taking 1000mgs of acetometaphen twice daily until the pain goes down. Do NOT eat hard foods, as this will aggravate your fillings immensely. Also, you may want to wear a mouth guard at night if you grind your teeth. I can not tell you that you won't have more pain, as you have fillings on both sides of your mouth and can't chew on one side like I can (I deliberately did not let my dentist fill two more cavities several days later, because I knew I would not be able to chew). Also, find a new dentist if you are not comfortable with your current dentist...I am. Good luck and I hope this helps you.
