The only thing that seems logical to me is prostatitis , which is an inflammation of the prostate or a pain in the prostate. He may not have any symptoms and yet some people notice symptoms right away. One symptom of prostatitis is sand like particles in the urine. Statisically speaking, approx 50% of men will have prostatitis sometime in their life. It is best that you tell him for his sake. He should get his prostate checked out to prevent a possibility of prostate cancer in the future. I know it may seem silly to discuss but does happen to a lot of men and does need to be attended to.
Hope this helped, best of luck!
