The past 4 years my stomach/abdomen has been extremely irritable. Almost daily I have been feeling either stabbing stomach pains or aches in my lower abdomen, but most of the time I am nauseous (flu-like).

These feelings mysteriously come and go, but in the past 10 days they have gotten a lot worse. 3 of the days I had a sharp pain in my lower-left abdomen, and the other days I felt extra nauseous, with chills, headaches, dizziness, and a watery mouth. I have been taking pepto bismol every day for the past 2 years to calm my stomachaches.

I have a phobia of throwing up and haven't in 4 years. When these feelings arise they get worse from anxiety. 2 years ago my doctor found me to be lactose intolerant, have acid-reflux, and irritable bowel syndrome. I am easily irritated by mostly every meal and have lost about 28 lbs fairly quickly in this time frame.

I worry about this daily to where it ruins social events and it is hard to attend work. Some say i'm paranoid, but they don't know what i'm feeling. Is there something internal waiting to be diagnosed? Could this be partially psychological? Please, please help me.

Please, take this only with a grain of salt, as I am not a doctor, but I thought I would try to help.
Have you been tested for an ulcer? As it's been 4 years, it probably can't be h-pylori causing it, so it may be stress. If the pain is stabbing, gets worse when you haven't eaten in a while, and even more so if you've drank alcohol it's a very real possiblity. You really should see a doctor, because undiagnosed peptic ulcers could be fatal. The ulcer grows to the point that it causes stomach bleeding, and if you're not the type to vomit blood, you won't know it's happening until it's too late. Please get tested.
One symptom doctors always ask for in problems associated with the psyche is frequent stomach problems. It is possible that it's in your head, but doubtful if you don't have any underlying problems with depression, anxiety or hypochondria.
I hope this helped a little, but please, please get tested as soon as possible.

Me Too!!!
Wow. I have had a fear of vomiting since february 3rd 2001. And I never, not once knew other people feared it as well. So much relief to know your not the only one. I have the same problems. Stomach aches daily, from ibs, stress, family drama, school, everything. I really really deeply fear throwing up and in no way do I want to, but at the slightest sense of feeling sotmach pain or nausous I freak out. No one understand, not my friends, not my family, and for sure not my boyfriend. I have anxiety issues and food germ issues now. If you ever need support in this, just replay on my for it because i'm there too. -ruby

Gosh, I wish we could all find good doctors that could help us! I've tried looking on the web for forums for emetophobia but there just arent that many around. I went to the doctor on monday and I believe I am being scheduled for an endoscopy procedure. Has anyone here ever had one before, im pretty scared, not of the procedure itself but the *sickening* after effects of the local anastesia. If anyone has had this procedure any information about it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

I also have emotophobia, something I have had since I was a child. Currently I am experiencing stomache problems, have been for a little over a month now. Today I am having blood tests and a breath test for an ulcer and then next week I am having an ultrasound. Hopefully one of these will discover the problem. Being afraid of throwing up/nausea makes it all worse of course!!!

Good luck to everyone with their problems, I am looking for an online forum regarding emotophobia and people with the same problem as me but cannot find anything!

Blue4me, I am really glad to hear your son is finally getting better, I know how hard it must've have been on him.

Irishgrl I hope your tests go well and they find out why you are so sick. They really need more emetophobia help sites out there, its a really big issue... If you ever want to talk or anyone else wants to talk, your welcome to email me!

Take care all!!

Saaaaame Here
Oh wow... I didn't know that so many other people felt this way... I am also very afraid of vomiting, but I doubt it's to the point where I could say I have a phobia... Anyways, since december I have had stomach problems... It actually was so bad about a week ago that I made myself puke... Pretty extreme for me being so afraid of it... I have gastroesophageal reflux disease (gerd) but was unmedicated at the time... After I ate I would feel a horrible burning sensation in the back of my throat and finally it got to the point where I puked... When I went to the dr I got put on protonix, which has helped with the reflux but not the nausea.... It seems like I can't eat anything without feeling very nauseous afterwards... Then I am afraid to eat anything for the rest of the day... Gatorade had been my best friend thro this, lol... It helps for all of you that can't eat w\o feeling ill... Make sure you at least drink gatorade, powerade, or pedialite... It will make sure you don't get dehydrated, which could make the problems even worse.... I have another dr appointment tomorrow to discuss how the protonix is working.... However i'll have to tell her I still feel nauseous a lot of the time... She told me last visit that if I continue to have stomach problems that I will get an upper gi.... I'll letcha all know how the visit goes

p.S. My sister-in-law got an endoscopy and didn't feel sick at all afterwards... The dr will just give you somthing to paralyse the muscles in your throat so you won't have a gag reflex... After the procedure she wasn't nauseous at all... Just had a little bit of a sore throat (a good excuse for some popsickles if they don't make you feel icky!!) hope this helps

till next time

Hey ashlee thanks for that that makes me feel alot better knowing your sis didnt get sick. I was just afraid that the anestesia they said they are going to give me to put me to sleep was going to make me sick, because when my mum had cancer and she had so many surgeries she would always vomit for days and days afterwards, I think I would jus rather kill myself than go through that. I actually found www.Emetophobia.Org but there's something screwed up on their site whenever you register to be a new member they never email you your password like they say they will. I tried contacting the owner of the site and ive gotten no answer. Anways, I hope everyone here is feeling better, take care all

I Suffered From This For Many Years Aswell.
I used to suffer from this aswell. For about 4 years I was deathly sick and I had heartburn and vomitted frequently. It turns out it was from my eating habbits. I never ate healthy and my body had become deficient in vitamins and other nutrients. I went to see a naturopathic doctor and he got me set up with a health-food diet and lots of suppliments to take. After 4 years of being sick, my stomach is finally better. But I still have to what what I eat now.

For more info on why my stomach is the way it is, check out my personal blog at http://depressionaffair.Blogspot.Com/

i hope you get better, it took me a long time to get better after all the garbage I put in my system.

Btw. I used to suffer from gerd aswell (used to take nexium), that stuff is really bad for you. Its just masking the underlying problem by stopping the production of stomach acid (which you need to digest food and kill off bacteria!).

I also had several tests done, all came back normal. Upper and lower g.I, 3 endoscope tests, ultrasound and 1 other I forget the name of. I was always disapointed when they came back normal because I wanted them to find something they could fix.

The only time I got any help was when my mom told me about a naturopathic doctor a friend at work told her about. I've been seeing him for 2 years now and my stomach feels great.

I can't eat wheat (flour), yeast, milk or any refined sugars anymore. Basically any produced food that comes in a can or box is bad. I only eat healthy food now (after years of eating pizza and junk food with galons of coca-cola). I used to smoke pot and cigarettes aswell and always suffered from anxiety and stress. All that crap put a big load on my body/stomach. I'm 22 now and i've been sick since I was 18. Only this year have I actually been getting better.

I would definately recommend you see a naturopathic and/or homeopathic doctor as it was the only thing that helped me.

Ps: i've suffered from emetophobia and agoraphobia since I was 13 (thanks to my dad). Read my blog for my life story if you're interested.

Pps: what are your eating habits and daily schedule like? Do you eat healthy? Do you exercise? Do you do drugs and/or smoke?

I hope you all get better as I have suffered from this and I am now 99% cured thanks to the best naturopathic doctor!

Have u tried to test your intestines for parasites. That could be an intestinal parasite, like blastocystis hominis for example.

For the last year I have had upper stomach problems in june 2005 I tested positive h.Pylora virus. I've also had upper and lower investigations which was not painfull cause, of course,(or thank god) they give you anestic but its later as they pump air in and of course it has to come back out. Yuk. These tests came back normal. I've been well fro the last 2 months and then last week it started again.
I've taken to a healthy diet and am feeling ok ish but the morning is very hard.

Please help!!!
I get stomach pains about once a week and have been getting them for years now. I feel nausiated but no matter how hard I try, I can't throw up. I simply started calling them my "sleepy pains" because they only happen at night. The thought of eating only makes me feel worse and the only thing I can eat is fruit. I still go out but absolutely hate it when I get them and I'm out with my friends, but you get used to it.

The only thing I have found to fix it is to fall asleep. The more I move the worse I feel (however, still, I do not throw up) and when I wake up I'm fine.

Does anyone have an explanation as to why I only get this at night and can't throw up no matter how much I jump around and try?? Please help! I am deadly afraid of needles and would much rather prefer some kind of natural herb tea that would settle my stomach compared to being put through tests that won't find out anything.

Hi,
Most stomach aches can occur from feeling stressed/anxious/nervous or depressed. Of course if you are really nervous this could lead to vomiting.
Food poisoning can lead to stomach aches but they are usually followed by vomiting or diahrea.
If there is persistent pain/swelling or any kind of secretion you should see a doctor straight away
as it could be caused by many serious/severe conditions.

Help for my child with emotophobia
Is emotophobia a fear of vomitting because some links are saying it is the fear of negative feelings. My daughters counsellor has said she has this (reason why we went to counselling). She has had a fear of the SOUND of vomitting since she was 6. Now that she is 10, it is extended to the thought that people MIGHT vomit. Has anyone found something that helps them with this fear/anxiety? I don't want it to get worse and manifest into physical symptoms like I'm seeing here.
