Alopecia Areata And Naproxen Sodium (aleve) Posted: 06-23-04 22:39pm
Okay. As a few of you may know, i've
recently discovered my little hair loss
problem and i'm trying to get as much info
as possible. Anyway, my sister sent me a
link to a website (not sure the validity
of the site's info) but on that site it
makes a claim that certain prescription
strength drugs can trigger alopecia
areata. One on the list is
naproxen...Prescription strength aleve,
which I have taken off and on for years
for chronic headaches. I also take aleve
like it is going out of style. Anyway,
has anyone else heard of a link between
hair loss and naproxen? Or it just bogus?

yes<in fact, my
daughter is taking aleve like crazy for
headaches. She is only 15. She lost
over half her head of gorgeous hair in a
month. I totally stopped the drug and
decided to take her to a headache
specialist instead.

Thanks Margy Jo Posted: 08-24-05 22:08pm
Thanks for your feedback. I gave up the
aleve too just in case, but it was a
underactive thyroid that was causing my
hair loss. If stopping the aleve doesn't
work for her, encourage your daughter to
have her thyroid levels checked. I had
no other symptoms but the hair loss and no
history in my family for hypothyroidism,
so it was a shock to me. So I encourage
she have it checked if the hair loss
continues. I too had severe headaches in
my teens, but they've gotten better in the
past 5 years (i'm 24 now).

great! Its always good
to find the source of the problem and
thank you for the idea of getting the
thyroid check. We did that already a
week ago and the test came back that her
levels are ok. I am sure I will be
living at the doctors again trying to
figure this out. Headaches scare me
because my I lost my father when he was
only 46 due to a brain stem hemmorage, and
he complained of those severe
headaches.....Thanks again. Have a great
day!!!

Glad Thyroid Is Ok Posted: 08-26-05 16:55pm
Its good to hear her thyroid levels were
okay. I will be praying that you'll find
out the cause/source of the headaches and
for healing for your daughter. 15 is a
tough age to have to live with that much
pain. And the hair loss is like a bonus
worry. It can kill your self-esteem. I
am fortunate that my hair loss did not
progress any further than it did. I hope
for the best for both of you.
